Our understanding of memory has changed dramatically over the last few decades. Based on data from patients and animal studies, the notion that memory is a unitary concept had to be revised. Instead, multiple memory systems are working together to enable an organism to benefit from previous experiences. The main distinction is being drawn between declarative memory - a flexible and in the human case conscious memory system - and procedural memory - a more rigid, skill based memory system.
