Sent here by Coursera and wow what a course. Steve Joorden's style of teaching is refreshing and easy to follow. And then to follow up with Sacks is like dinner AND desert!

Every time I listen to two minutes of Oliver Sacks (left ear only!), and every time I read a sentence of his, I learn something new and mind-boggling.

Do you make a distinction between phantom limb and phantom pain? I had a btk amputation about 5 weeks ago. I am definitely experiencing phantom pain (2 forms: 1. the feeling of a vice pushing down on where my big toe would have been and 2. (more irritatingly) a zinging feeling that makes my leg jerk.) But I got over mistaking my former leg from still being there weeks ago. The pain is still there, but I don't reach out for the leg [eg to massage it] any more.

Notably, I can "point and flex" my former foot in my mind, and make the anterior tibialis and gastrocnemius contract and relax.
