Britain’s chief mouser, Larry the cat, is marking the tenth anniversary of his arrival at 10 Downing Street. The cat, adopted from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, was brought in to clean up an infestation of rats at the British Prime Minister's official residence.

@@M2Mil7er it’s London. Of course it will have rats. I live in a small town 50 miles away from London. My cats make regular rat kills. Most places have rats. They just hide up during the day. You’re never far away from a rat.

That was why ancient Egyptians loved cats so much. Someone figured out that the presence of cats meant pests didn't get into your food stores and that feeding the cats kept them around. A fair trade.

@@halfbakedproductions7887 Right? It was very similar for cats too, they pretty much found the animal equivalent of a goldmine. There was a lot of food in human settlements that they could eat (especially after people started feeding them), a lot of buildings to take shelter in, and since most wild animals keep their distance from humans (or humans took care of them if they did go near), there was very little competition and even less predators to look out for. Not to mention that at a certain point both humans and cats discovered that petting cats is actually really enjoyable for both parties. Same goes for playing with them. It’s really lucky and interesting, the lifestyle of humans and the nature (and diet) of cats meshed so well together that we were just drawn to each other. We didn’t even really need to domesticate them, they pretty much came into our lives perfect for what we needed them for. And they still aren’t fully domesticated, yet they’re still perfect for us. It’s a lot like how our and dogs’ ancestors realised that hunting and living together made them very successful. There was a lot of domestication involved, but it was still pretty much the same story, two species realised that their lifestyles worked so well together and there were so many benefits for both parties that it was bound to happen. Both cats and dogs are humanity’s best friends and we have so much to thank them for.
