Our Larry vs Harry Bullitt cargo bike has about 500 miles on it, which is a big deal seeing our average trip distance is 3.6 miles! I figured this was a good time to post an initial review of the family cargo bike, how we built it up, and answer the question, "Would you buy it again?"
Did I forget anything? Do you have a question? Let me know in the comments!

I got my bare Bullitt frame last week, building it up now with a Bafang motor. It'll be a 1x 10-speed. So far the only thing I've had trouble finding is an E-50 rear tire in 26x2.0 but I did finally find a shop that had one. Thanks for the review!

GCN did a vid about stiffness.the tests showed that any power given to cranks just ends up back into the rear cassette so even tho it "feels" like you're losing power you're really not blowing away "the noodle is slower" myth.its really interesting

Would this be a good option for touring? Seems like if I wanted to carry a lot of gear, it would fit the bill!

Hello. I'm a cyclist and I'm looking for a "easy and fast" cargo bike. Your video is from 2016, I don't know if you still have your bike but I send you my question: We have two cars, and I would like to sell one of them. A cargo bike would be the way for us to keep only one car. My children are teenagers so the cargo bike will not really be used to transport them but to go shopping and carry things. The big question is: without or with electric motor ? What do you think ? Thank you. Chris from France.

Chris - It is really up to you. I have actually replaced this with the Urban Arrow Family that I'll be posting a video of soon.

Douze cycles are great, very nimble and one of the few that has an alternative steering system making it more stabile to ride at any speed. Don't get the electric assisted one though, bionix is on it's way out. For me the big difference between Bullit/douze and Bakfiets/urban Arrow is the seating position. The first are courier style and the second are Dutch style ride. In my experience ( I have 12 cargobikes ) the latter is more comfortable for long rides. The most important factor to consider is the child's seating height ! With the models like Bullit your child sits very low. This doesn't matter if you never come near any traffic, if you do use it in city traffic I would never put my kids in that position. I have three children and have been using selling and renting out cargo bikes for more than 10 years. I hope you"l enjoy your purchase

i have a bakfiets.nl bike, also a great option. i had a lot of issues with flat tires since I moved to Hoboken NJ. replaced the standard tire and tube with a Marathon Plus tire plus a self repairing inner tube. no issues for a year. maybe a tip...

Any hills on your ride? What gear ratios are you running? We're considering one in Seattle for hauling our kid to day care, but are a little wary of a 250 ft climb over 1 mile with a 100 lb rig. I'd rather avoid the e-assist.

+Mark Quitan I'm 5'10 with a 33" inseam. My wife is 5'6 with a 29" inseam and also fits on it well. Where are you based out of? Maybe we could find you one to demo!

+Mark Quitan Hi Mark, try a few different models before you get one. The Larry versus Harry is a bit small for 2 kids. Try Metro bikes or the original Bakfiets that has been on the market for at least 25 years. Another popular model is the Urban Arrow, but those come with electric support and if you live in a flat area you won't need it.

+Mark Quitan Thanks BSG and elie. @BSG good to know on the height difference since thats my wife and I (although she's the tall one) we are in PHX AZ. @elie I was going to have my Father and Brother in law build a wide enough box for my 2 monkeys. I like the Bullitt for its customization potential. Have either of you ridden a Douze?... looking at that also since it can be separated into 2 parts to transport if needed.

How did you secure the car seat in the box? Looks like you're using a base, yeah?
@BikeShopGirl

KZbin keeps deleting my comment... it was secured using a ratchet strap attached to bolts through the frame and the foam under the seat. The Base raised it up too high IMO.

I test rode a Xtracycle with Yepp & Hooptie in the back with my 2 year old son, and felt a bit uncomfortable when maneuvering the bike, especially when not riding. I know you mentioned the bullitt was twitchy... would you recommend it as a more stable option than a long tail cargo bike, or is it just a matter of needing more practice time riding it?
@BikeShopGirl
@BikeShopGirl 7 жыл бұрын
I would say a long tail is more stable.
@maxfactor7829
@maxfactor7829 7 жыл бұрын
Arleigh - are you saying the long tail or the front loader cargo is more stable? I believe the front loader with lower center of gravity is better balanced - without all that weight higher and over one of the wheels?
@BikeShopGirl
@BikeShopGirl 7 жыл бұрын
Matt - for handling / steering I would say a long tail is more stable for most people. The front end takes time to get used to steering while a long tail you just hop on and go. If you are turning at high speed the bullitt rides like rails, but if you are going slow speed turns I would pick a long tail any day.

Do babies really have to be rear facing in a bike as well? I don't think so, I think that's based on car crashes, which are going to be different than any bike crashes.
@ClaireRichardsRN
@ClaireRichardsRN 7 жыл бұрын
Hmm... when we did reading on this we never encountered this info. Do you have any resources on that? I thought it was different since the speed of a bike is different plus infants are reclined. People don't put their toddlers rear facing in trailers, for example, even though with cars rear facing is recommended for as long as feasible with your particular car seat.
@BikeShopGirl
@BikeShopGirl 7 жыл бұрын
Claire - Sorry, used my personal account earlier! Technically you aren't supposed to use a trailer until 12-18 months for the same reason. My daughter was 6 months old when we started using the Bullitt, and we used a toddler carseat facing backwards until she was about 18 months. My resource = My wife is an emergency medicine pediatrician and asking trailer (Burley) manufactures. If you are to stop suddenly they just can't handle the force until they are 12-18 months (child specific of course). A bullitt was my only option if I wanted to ride with my daughter before then!
@ClaireRichardsRN
@ClaireRichardsRN 7 жыл бұрын
Gotcha. I hear you- I'll need to contact some trailer manufacturers- it'd be nice if they could publish this information. My thought was that in a bicycle accident, that it works differently. If there is an accident, it can come from any particular direction... not like rear-ending someone at 30-50 miles an hour in a car. When I had a bike accident, I ran over a nub which made my bike fall to the side, while braking I then I hit my husband who was riding next to me and fell back to the other side. If I had a trailer, it likely would have been knocked over to the side. I don't know if anyone actually does any real safety studies for car seats in bike trailers or cargo bikes. If anything, they'd say not to do it at all but I think the risk of accident (or even sudden stopping that would cause a babies neck to fly forward) is low enough I say to keep living and just try to be safe. And go ahead and put your baby forward facing in a trailer if that's the only option you have.

UTOOBME I've built 9 front load cargo bikes and sold for $250 on Craigslist, because I only used parts from existing bikes, not high quality expensive parts Bullitt has. With expensive parts even I can't make it for less than a 1000. It is also possible to use the "Lift" converter that turns your regular bike into cargo bike. They start making them for like $800 next Spring. I can make one like that for very little, but the shipping alone is gonna cost a lot.

Umm....Aluminum? Welded to perfection? The competition is much less money but have poor resale value. You might want to move into thee 90's and pony up for that which you cannot build. Never forget a economy car costs 5 times this and is a throw away vehicle. BTW....I have never seen a used Bullitt for sale and if I do it will be 2K or more. So what is the real cost of owning a Bullitt? Maybe a thousand dollars over a few years.

BUT THAT WILL MOST LIKELY NEVER HAPPEN WHAT A SHAME IT COULD HAVE BEEN SO BIG .....👍😊
