1.58 - Dunst is trying to show the audience that Lars is 'joking' through her reaction to him. Also, her arm around him is a protective gesture and she is trying to get him to stop/and/or change topic. Women are fantastically socially aware. Edit: After the aforementioned - Dunst strokes her neck to self-soothe, and then crosses her arms in front of her body (shut off/defensive gesture) as she realised Lars was not going to stop (he doesn't seem to 'get' the social dynamics).

He wasn't joking! Trier is a Nazi sympathizer. And it's interesting that we, in general, find this difficult to believe. Being a filmmaker, he understands the power of film as propaganda and has, as we all have, witnessed a crusade of anti-nazi propaganda which has continued and grown since ww2. An intelligent human working in the art of film, cannot help but ask such a question: Is Hitler really as evil as we've been *taught*? To not ask this question is, quite frankly, self-lobotomizing.

danes sometimes say things before they think them over and their humor is somewhat direct and not relateable but I gotta tell you - this guy isn't a nazi and even if he was, he wouldn't do anything to hurt anyone. There's nothing wrong with being whatever you want as long as you know exactly why you made that choice and you don't harm anyone. Only idiots take things to extremities, if a person is intelligent enough he'll be able to sustain his true personality, regardless of his beliefs.

Dang, Kirsten just straight out lied about this on Ellen. She said it all started when a reporter asked a totally inappropriate question about his Mother dying and finding out he had another dad. In fact she asked about an interview he had already done, nothing leading or inappropriate about the question.

When asked if he could envision doing a film on a grander scale than "Melancholia" -which is already a disaster movie of interplanetary proportions - and, what the journalist's question devolves to, if he's open to direct a bigger budgeted 'Hollywood Blockbuster' movie, Lars Von Trier answers as follows: "On a grander scale? Yeah, that's what we Nazis.... we... eh... we have a tendency to try to do things on a greater scale... So yeah, maybe you could persuade me to a.. to a... yeah... Final Solution (Endlösung) with journalists..." I think that's what got him booted from Cannes more so than the nazi references. He jokingly started calling himself a Nazi during the interview but primarily because he admitted that he admires Albert Speer's architecture in response to a relevant question. He had already distanced himself from the worse aspects of Nazi rule, so he wasn't being that mischievous to leave anything open to interpretation. I think it's rather because he ridiculed the press corps and perhaps inadvertently - on a grander scale (ahem) - the whole Cannes marketing event itself. On the other hand, it was probably still highly inappropriate to joke around with such sensitive topics and at the very least a public apology was in order.

@thelatestttplague Also, the reason I even bring Polanski up to begin with is because the people at Cannes actually petitioned for his freedom. Not because he was innocent(he already acknowledged the fact that he actually committed his crime) but simply because they love his art. The fact that he is a good artist doesn't mean he can get away with anything. The people at Cannes are beyond hypocritical for this. Am I really the only one who sees something wrong with this?

@Eespea The point is that his "joke" was extremely racist and offensive to a lot of people. If that didn't offend you thats fine but it was offensive to a lot of people and something needed to be done about it. Its not something you joke about it the first place, it's common sense... and wether he's "one of the best living directors" makes no difference in the matter.

@ConspX Ok --- Von Trier is not a Nazi, or a Jew. These identities are obviously playthings for him. Unfortunately for me, I find he has this same attitude with regard to his characters. He is sadistic, and I detect that the artist is exploring his own misanthropy through his work. I've enjoyed some of his movies, and I've even loved hating others.

He has no bad intension with saying this. He has no bad nature. He is trying to make a point. he is trying to search for answers, he is a film maker who is searching for his way of explaining things. If he had more time to think about his subject.. It just wasn't the correct time of him to talk about this, without overthinking what he is saying. So what are you when you watch this and you say oh my god how awful of him to say.. it's true that people do wrong things and pure evil exists, but give the man a break. You people make it worse and think about it in an awful way.
