Lasers are legitimately terrifying.

its only a matter of time before we see units like this at Ace hardware, or even Target haha. Maybe not these high power CW lasers (continuous wave/output), but the pulsed variety (MOPA fiber lasers). Right now these lasers are in a kind of purgatory, where they are too expensive for consumers, but too much of a liability for industry. I reached out to a researcher who wrote an article about the new trend in handheld laser processing and this is what they said. Hi Kevin, With regards to your interest in handheld laser welding, I recommend you read this article (www.lasersystemseurope.com/analysis-opinion/questioning-safety-handheld-laser-welding) in Electro Optics' sister magazine: Laser Systems Europe. I would very much air on the side of caution regarding this application. We've had readers contact us in the past saying they've bought handheld laser welding systems, however are not able to use them due to safety risks/laser firms not being able to produce goggles for these systems/lack of training available. Also, at a recent laser processing exhibition, a safety firm I spoke with (producer of goggles and windows for enclosures) remarked that they are not going anywhere near this application due to the risks involved, which I thought was quite noteworthy. From what I've learnt myself about laser materials processing technology, the best solution is to always have the laser contained in a Class-1 format away from humans (in a machine, behind barriers with fume extraction technology). It's not like other handheld welding technologies and poses very different risks. That's just my two-cents. But as I say other readers have bought these systems and then just have them lying around gathering dust as they can't actually use them within the safety laws of their country.
@pikusek2550 Жыл бұрын
@@TheBackyardScientist So what you're saying is... only a brave enough man can use it? Man it truly is a shame that such a thing is reduced to a toy for adult kids to play with, i've read a bit of that article to check cause i've thought it's not worth it cause of the upkeep but it truly is just cause of safety and lack of awareness in this field? That's just sad, but as you've shown safety is nowhere near this thing, you could kill a person in a second and make them blind in a fraction of that. But how do you make a death laser safe? Yeah general use isn't ready for this, but at least some people can use it as private owners and for a content creator like you this is golden. Since this field is still active i'm looking forward to many uses for lasers anyway, maybe in space, where there isn't a lot of things to burn and breathe in, but i don't wanna jinx the laser making a disco party on some planet bajilion lightyears away

@Zero26729 Жыл бұрын
That’s oddly specific
@DUIofPhysics Жыл бұрын
@@darkshadowsx5949 Literally none of what you said was right, and most of it didn't make sense. For a start, the spectrum has no influence on the amount of total power (beyond the energy per photon - which green actually has more energy then IR). The wavelength of light affects the absorption of the target material. If you want to cut copper, Green will do far better then IR, as 532nm is absorbed much better then 1064nm. On the other hand, if you try and cut something that is green with a green laser, it won't go as well, as most if not all the green light is reflected off. Nonlinear Crystals actually requite extremely high peak powers to even work. The crystals become more efficient, and the effect becomes more prounounced as the intensity of the beam increases. This is why NLCs such as BBO or KTP are usually used with a Q-Switched laser. The laser is focused in on the crystal such that the intensity of the beam is at, or close to (depending on the power density theshold and max electric field densities) it's focus point.

This was epic Kevin. I'd love to see a tear down of the laser. What type of juicy HV we talking about here? Also - that plasma speaker at the end is just delicious.

Crazy that a laser still encounters the same problem of binding your blade when cutting a tree down 😅

I'm an arborist, and one day, I hope there will be a light saber invented. That would be my favorite tool to use in a tree company. From tree to slabs in minutes ❤ Meanwhile, planting some trees along the way.

I remember seeing these awhile back and it’s just incredible how strong light is, when condensed to sizes so small you can barely even see it, if you could - I’ve always loved this channel because it also teaches the serious safety behind all the crazy stuff
@another3997 Жыл бұрын
You can't see the light from this laser anyway, no matter how small or large the beam. The fact that diffuse light from the sun can blind you and set fire to things 93 million miles away just by using a simple, cheap lens, should give you an idea of what light can really do.

My main takeaway from this is that blasters from Star Wars can be real. And that Stormtrooper helmets probably had welding goggle lenses installed haha. How many of these would you need to combine to make a Death Star?
@satanhell_lord Жыл бұрын
That would explain why their aim is so bad too
@volvo245 Жыл бұрын
Militarized lasers to replace battle rifles or assault rifles would have to be pulsed lasers. They would be absolutely horrific devices capable of causing steam explosions if they hit soft tissue directly. Basically causing similar damage as hand grenades or blasting caps, large cratering wounds and full or partial amputation of limbs. Very few fictional depictions of them exist probably because the movie or tv show would have to be R rated.
@juliavixen176 Жыл бұрын
The Death Star laser must be at least 2.24 x 10^32 joules to destroy a planet similar to Earth... the laser in this video can only output 2 x 10^3 joules per second. So... you would need approximately 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 of these lasers to deliver enough energy in one second to destroy the Earth.

You should do a test to see how much protection safety glasses actually bring. I guess, they are not there to make you stare into a laser but just to prevent the worst if there is some split second reflection from an object you use the laser on.

@@cewla3348 Styropyro's strongest laser is like an order of magnitude weaker and with orders of magnitude worse focus lol. I'd not trust pointing that laser at my eyes through a steel plate, let alone any glasses, they are for reflections...
@reddragonflyxx657 Жыл бұрын
@@antaresmc4407 Yeah, he literally showed it cutting through steel plate in this video (with the cutting attachment, the cleaner seems fine with steel so long as it doesn't dwell on one spot). It's like a waterjet/plasma cutter (or even a rotary tool), none of which you want to intentionally point at your PPE.
