Can you engrave tumbler cups?
@ThatSocratesguy4 жыл бұрын
Wait let me get this right, you can't engrave metals like stainless steel, silver or gold with the glowforce (without the workarounds you mentioned like the spray or powder coating)?? That's a bummer. 😓 So that means the glowforce basically isn't really meant for engraving jewelry like stainless steel or silver bracelets /pendants etc?
@macrumpton4 жыл бұрын
@@ThatSocratesguy To really engrave metals directly like you mention you would need a much more powerful laser. The workaround is that you can coat the metal piece with some kind of paint and then use the laser to burn through the areas that you want engraved, and then put the metal into an acid bath that eats away at the metal where it is not covered by the paint.

What a great video.Very inspiring. I'm thinking of getting a Glowforge and am currently at the research stage. Could you, or any other Glowforge users, tell me if it would be any good for cutting camel bone knife scales?
@JohnKuiphoff3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I'm pretty sure that they might engrave well. The bone sample at the end of the video engraved beautifully on the first try. I'd happy to try one out and mail it back to you if that helps. However, cutting the camel bone might be a bit more difficult. My first guess without researching it is that cutting would work better on the cnc machine (or just using a bandsaw with some sanding afterwards) and engraving afterwards using the Glowforge. The only thing is that bone dust isn't too good for you... you might need to wear a good respirator. It also smells pretty bad when being engraved.

That's crazy, thank you! How did you do the stainless? Did it require anything special? Like a spray or enhanced laser?
@JohnKuiphoff3 жыл бұрын
I usually order the cut pieces from SendCutSend.com as the Glowforge (or any other C02 laser) can't cut metal. It's easy, I just upload my vector file to their website, pay about $30 and get a ton of parts back in a few days. Once I get it back, I spray the stainless steel with Cermark Marking Spray and mark/engrave it in the Glowforge shortly after (300 speed; 100 power; 370 LPI). After that, I just wash off the cermark spray and it's done. Sometimes I got it with Everbright to protect it and bring out the blacks. I didn't use it in this video because I didn't know about it until recently :)

Hello John Where else can you buy laser material? Glowforge shop is out of stock most of the time. I need clear acrylic and plywood material, bad. I have a big order coming.
@JohnKuiphoff4 жыл бұрын
I've used makerstock.com (a local company for me) and estreetplastics.com for acrylic quite a bit. Although, I haven't found anything as nice as the Glowforge proofgrade plywood anywhere else. I've tried a few different sources and the Glowforge Proofgrade plywood is just so much nicer and always flat. With that said, I often use my drum sander to make thinner solid wood for projects that don't need the stability that plywood affords. This question comes up a lot on the Glowforge Users Group on Facebook.

@JohnKuiphoff3 жыл бұрын
Hi Amanda! I believe that you can only "mark" a small portion of the outside of a sterling silver with the Glowforge. The marking on metal doesn't actually have any depth at all. Rings are usually engraved using a different kind of machine (either a small dentist-like drill or a specialized CNC machine). @JohnKuiphoff4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sanaul! Thanks so much! Yes, you can vent out of the window. However, you might consider ordering the air filter as well. If it is nice outside and neighbors above you have their windows open, the fumes might bother them - the air filter will allow you to run this inside completely without bothering the neighbors (however, you'll need to replace the filter once in a while). Although, if it's a bit colder out and your neighbors have their windows closed, you can probably vent out your window. It also depends on what your cutting/engraving. Some materials have an odor (wood, acrylic, leather, etc) and others do not (metal, light engraving of any material). Also, a typical power outlet can handle the load. Feel free to reach out at kuiphoff[at]gmail.com if you'd like to talk more!

Marek Vančo thank you! Unfortunately, it’s not safe to engrave resin (something like total boat) as far as I know. I believe that it might release some pretty toxic gases. Did you have a video that included the settings for the different woods?
@JohnKuiphoff3 жыл бұрын
I usually use the preset for proofgrade maple as it look similar for almost any hard wood. Softer woods (like pine) usually require less power as the wood burns more easily. Some wood is difficult to engrave due to the grain (certain parts are hard or soft) It's often difficult to engrave red or white oak. I will be uploading a lot more Glowforge videos this summer after I'm finished with a home renovation and plan to upload a video specifically on engraving every type of wood.

Thanks, John for the great video, full of possibilities. We are also from NJ and would like to know where do you get your wood from?
@JohnKuiphoff4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Cicero! I purchase most of my solid wood from Willard Brothers in Lawrenceville, NJ. They're really great. I also purchase a lot of proofgrade material directly from Glowforge when it's available. The proofgrade stuff is a little pricey, but it's really nice to work with.

Hi John, is this machine suitable for engraving names on jewellery? Obviously, many jewellery items may not be absolutely flat. Thanks.
@JohnKuiphoff3 жыл бұрын
Hi John, you can "mark" metal using Cermark spray using the Glowforge - I do this all of the time. If the items are not absolutely flat, that'll probably be okay (rings might be a bit tricker if the engraving is large). I've engraved lots of items that aren't perfectly flat. With that said, you might also want to look into a fiber laser if you'd like to work with jewelry - it's a different type of laser than the Glowforge. Ideally, you might eventually purchase a fiber laser and a C02 laser... but you might want to look into buying a fiber laser first, depending on the look you are looking for.

Amazing video, full of great content! Great production value as well. If I may make a small piece of constructive criticism for future videos. Try to not let the music over power your dialogue. There are a few moments in your video where you get pretty drowned out by that music track! I''m looking forward to seeing more content on this channel!

Brent George Hi, Brent! Thanks so much for the kind words! Absolutely, I’ll keep the music volume in mind. I’m learning a lot with each new video - I’m in the middle of filming and editing a laser cut router template video now and already see things I’d like to improve for the next one. It’s funny... it took years to get good at woodworking - I’m not sure why i expected to be good at video stuff immediately. Ha! I do appreciate any honest feedback as it will make future content better.

Thank you John, did you use your GF to cut the Corian or just engrave it?
@JohnKuiphoff9 ай бұрын
I engraved the Corian with my Glowforge. However, it was cut using my CNC machine. You might be able to cut it with a laser, but it would probably take a few passes.

Question what's the size of the black tray?? Well guess it doesn't matter if I have the pro I can feed it through the passthrough but again I dont know the size
@JohnKuiphoff3 жыл бұрын
It’s about 12 inches by 20 inches. I have the pro which helps if I need to cut something larger. Although, most of what I need to engrave or cut for clients tends to be smaller... so the Glowforge has worked out so far :)

I don't know if you will get this message, it's been almost a year since the video was posted. The list of materials you have a link to was to include banned materials, but I didn't see them mentioned on the list. What materials would you stay away from? Thanks.
@JohnKuiphoff3 жыл бұрын
H John, the most important materials to avoid (as they are common materials) are PVC and vinyl. Other materials on the banned list include pleather, HDPE, PolyStyrene Foam, PolyPropylene Foam, Epoxy, Fiberglass, Carbon Fiber, PTFE, Beryllium oxide. Hope this helps!

@@JohnKuiphoff Extremely useful, thank you John. I had to look some of those nasties up on the internet, but at least I now know what to stay clear of. I was wondering about polystyrene. Have subscribed to your channel and look forward to learning more :)
