I am a diabetic living in England suffering from diabetes. about 12 yrs ago I had laser eye surgery on the nhs for a cataract in my left eye that made me completely blind in that eye, long story short, the op went well and restored my sight back to normal. Being a UK citizen I paid nothing. Being diabetic I still have to have laser surgery for ongoing cataracts as I also have to have injections in my eyeballs now and again, 6 times so far but its free.

Minus 3 Alanna. Heavens, you know nothing. I was minus 10 and 11. I contracted cataracts and I had to go private to have them removed. It was Vision Express (yes the Vision Express) who told me that I needed them removed. She said I’d be able to see perfectly afterwards. Having worn glasses for 60 years I didn’t believe her, but she was right. No idea why!

When you have laser eye surgery like Alana they laser your eyes when you have cataract surgery they cut the cornea and suck out the lens from your eye they then replace the lens with a flexible lens into the pocket the prescription of this lens depends on your eye prescription and is a compromise that either gives perfect distance vision or perfect reading vision you may still need glasses after cataract surgery

@@MattDunny Thank you. I had no idea that was what they were doing. You’re quite right. My long distance vision is OK, but I still need glasses to see near at hand.

I was a minus 4 (left) and a minus 6 (right) until my lasik in 2005. And I thought I was pretty short sighted in both until I met my now ex-wife and my stepdaughter had a minus 8 in one of her eyes. I've also had a lens replacement for a cataract in my right eye. Left eye will need doing in the next few years I reckon. The optician is keeping a watch on the cataract there. I now have serviceable reading vision due to the cataract in my left eye. And passable distance vision due to my right eye being ok. I could wear glasses to improve both. But it's pretty pointless since I don't drive any longer and I can read my computer screen fine. The improvement would be marginal at best. So why bother?

Don't you become long sighted in later life? I haven't had laser done to my eyes but have moved to multifocal contact lenses a couple of years ago as I was struggling to read anything on my phone. I think I pay £240 a year for lenses + £60(ish) for solution so it'd take about 15-20 years for me to get my money back BUT you're paying for convenience. My sight isn't too bad, I can watch tv ok without glasses/lenses but I can't drive so I haven't done it, yet ;o)

Yeah I was 2005 I think it was. Actually got the surgery via ebay auction. The company I used sold off unused surgery slots on ebay so I got both eyes together for £1300 iirc. Not worn glasses since. Though my eyesight is definitely worsening with age now. But that would have happened anyway. My long departed mother had the vision of a hawk until she was 50. And died at age 75 pretty much completely blind.

I'm so glad your corneal surgery was a success! As people get older, the lens of the eye, behind the cornea, slowly becomes less flexible - which means that your range of focus ("accommodation" of the lens) reduces. You'll then probably find that you gradually need reading glasses while still being able to focus on more distant objects. That's a change that affects pretty much every person from middle age. it's just one of those things. Meanwhile, I'm glad that your surgery was a success. Enjoy your new super-vision!

I've worn glasses almost all of my life, and I doubt that I will ever have this surgery done on me. My reason, however, is simply that I am so accustomed to them that it would not be worth it at my age. I'm almost 64. That said, I'm glad that things went well for you. You look fine either way. By the way, I didn't see any bed hair, so I hope that makes you feel better about that.

You would struggle to get them do it at 64. I was just 40 when I had it done 19 years ago. And the surgeon doing the procedure said he estimated my success rate at just 95% due to my age. With younger people having a success rate of perfect vision more like 99%

Be careful if you need to drive at night regularly. 2 people I know pretty much had to only drive in daylight from that point onwards due to the glare making them impossible to see. Some people it doesn't affect them too badly, but it's something people need to consider before going through with it.

The aftereffects of your surgery were very like those of my cataract replacement surgery which was also very scary but they do only do one eye at a time and you have to wait about 4 months for the second one. I was one of the first in the country to have LASEK, as a case study at St. Thomas', thirty years ago. I was about -4.5. Each eye was done separately. I was able to read better than driving standard ten minutes after the procedure. The first eye was quite painful for a few days after. The second eye was pain free. The results lasted about twenty five years, and then old age struck. I have now had lens replacement as it corrected long and short sight, and also very slight cataracts. This was a scarier procedure, but the improvement is immense. Surprisingly it wasn't a lot more expensive than your procedure, and it is a true operation. As a tip to people having these operations, get some industrial safety goggles to wear overnight. They are more comfortable, and stay in place more effectively.

Hi Alanna , fascinated to hear your experience. I am twice your age and was -12, (laser surgery was not recommended) persevered with contact lens for decades until I developed cataracts. Had it done on the NHS (I was lucky in not having to wait) an they were just brilliant bless them and all for free! They slit open the front then break up the lens with ultrasound then shove in a synthetic lens. So the surgeon said He could correct my vision by using the appropriate lens. Had both done two months apart. The post op eye drops scenario was the same as you described. My vision is set to long distance and because Im an old fart I need readers for screen work/reading etc. But to not have to go through the daily ball ache of inserting/removing lens cleaning lens ... losing one on the floor because i was tired etc ..... sheer bliss. Great vid as always, so pleased it worked so well for you

I love these type of Alanna videos! A fountain of information from personal experience, full of advice given as suggestions and not prescriptions. All told with her trademark humorous humility. Whether it's her bureaucratic experiences as a new 'ex-pat', her dramas with a few of her rental situations, her navigating through bouts of home-sickness or whatever particular situation living in a country other than your birth country throws her way, it's always the same. "Here's what happened, here's how I handled it, here's the result. These few things I should have done better, those few things 'tricked' me because I'm not native, these are the folks that helped (or hindered) me through it. Finally, I recommend you prepare this way, if you are likely to face the same situation." With a smile. Regarding vision, I've been wearing glasses for 60 years and they've been a pain for that entire time. I'm sure I don't help my situation by taking them off every chance I get at work or home. Glasses are just a pain if your daily life requires you to be outside in rainy or snowy weather, or if the temperature or humidity rapidly changes, or if there is a chance they might get dirty (hint: there's no chance, only certainty). The last time I had my vision checked the ophthalmologist recommended laser eye surgery but covid immediately got in the way and afterwards I've not really seen a big enough benefit for the time I've got left. That and the fact that I'd still have to wear corrective lenses to drive, as I have a lazy eye that no laser surgery is going to help. But a large portion of life lived glasses free sure sounds appealing. If we assume your mom's surgery cost $6000 and lasted 15 years, that's an average of $400 a year. That sum could easily be spent annually just maintaining your glasses, keeping them safe with cases etc, and if you consider glasses to be (necessary) fashion accessories that sum could be easily exceeded. So potentially all of the cost of laser corrected vision without actually _having_ laser corrected vision.

Thank you for the great description of your experience! I'm a lifelong contacts/glasses wearer and I don't mind it at all, I'm used to contacts and in fact I often get compliments on my glasses when I wear them. But I've always been concerned about specific instances where corrective lenses are troublesome- swimming is the obvious example, but also what if there's a fire/burglary/other emergency at night, I can't find my glasses, no time to put on my glasses so I just can't see? I've been thinking of laser surgery much more seriously this year so your video came at just the right time!

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with laser eye surgery, particularly how it has been a year later. I was not aware of SMILE, I had only heard of LASIK and PRK. Unlike you I can see reasonably well enough in many contexts without my glasses and can do without them when they are especially inconvenient although I legally need them to be able to drive. I also work in a profession where glasses are commonplace and expected. Given these facts laser surgery interests me, but the benefits are not compelling enough and the risks are hard to justify.

It's usually referred to as the 'recovery room', rather than 'the hangout room'. Anniversary means the date an event took place in a previous year. So the *first anniversary* is one year after the event. The *second anniversary* is the two years after the event, and so on. You don't need to say one-year or two-year anniversary, because the elapsed time is stated implicitly in the word 'anniversary'. Eye-drops in bed - genius! Also amazed that you've gained better vision than you had with glasses. This is fantastic news.

I had Lasik about 18 years ago in India - it was quite a bit cheaper over there! While it's not forever I still don't need glasses for driving or watching the TV or cinema. I'm older now, so am seeing the effects of long sightedness, so I do need reading glasses. Especially for reading paper in low light. Laptops are fine, as they're lit. I remember the plastic goggle things and crusty eyes, as your not meant to touch them for a week. No question though - really glad I did it.

I had laser eye surgery at Optimax in Finchley Road London in 2002 and it was the best thing I ever did. It has been fabulous not having to wear glasses. Unfortunately, as I am.now 66, I have had to start to wearing glasses for reading and have to wear distance glasses for driving or going to the cinema just for distance clarity. I would recommend it all day long, but it would be a good idea to get at least two opinions first.

Thanks for making this video Alanna. It's something I've half thought about, but my eyes aren't too bad (-1.75 & -2.00), so I decided the risk wasn't worth it, even though it's small. However I'm now 54 and my eyes have now got to an annoying point where up to 3 feet away I see fine with my glasses, or about a foot away without them, but between 1-3 ft things are a bit blurred so I'm constantly taking my glasses on and off. Might have to get bifocals next time ans so laser eye surgery is becoming more attractive. N.B. My father, who passed on this year (he was 88 and had a good life), had his cataracts done on the NHS and it was all very straight forward. He loved reading and being able to see the TV made a big difference to his quality of life in his last couple of years.

At 50 they wouldn’t advise it any way due to the ageing eye muscles. But if you’re in your 20s-early 40s depending on how bad your vision is it can be very liberating and life enhancing 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'm a glasses wearer (AKA speccy four-eyes) and have been for as long as I can remember. Like yourself, I wear them 24/7 but I don't think my prescription is as "severe" as yours because I can see without specs and could function if I didn't have then, but I'm finding as I get older that I can't leave my glasses off for long periods like I used to. I'm late 30s and back when I was in my late teens/20s I'd quite often sack off the bins when I was on a night out or at the pub etc and I would be fine. Anyway, I have always been curious about laser eye surgery and I know people who have had it done. One of the main barriers to me getting my eyes lasered is the cost. I stopped watching when you said it cost 5.5 bags to have it done! I don't have that kind of cash laying around. My current pair of glasses cost about £150, which I would consider as on the expensive side for a pair of specs. Even when taking into account that I only bought them because I had lost my previous (identical) pair then that's still "only" 300 quid. That being said, everyone I have spoken to who I know has had it done absolutely raves about it, so I'm not completely ruling it out, but there are higher priority things that I would spend that kind of money on at the moment, even if I had it which I don't!

Had surgery at least ten years ago. Best £4000 I ever spent. The most freakish 40 minutes of your life. The biggest memory, which they didnt warn you about, is the smell of burning flesh ! I used Ultralase in Guildford. Have never needed a “top up” , I do need reading glasses, they cant fix everything. But ten years later my long distance view is still excellent.

It's only not permanent in the sense it doesn't stop your eyes from aging, but the laser correction doesn't wear off and revert, your eyes will still age though. It's not good to let even healthy eyes get dry, if it bothers you or not. Eye drops 2 or 3 times a day is good for all eyes, at least 2 times a day, morning and night will help eyes stay healthy. I've heard South Africans say "aircon", but I don't think I've heard a Canadian say aircon before.

There's an island made out of cheese? Wow! Sounds like paradise. And delicious! Do they have cheese mines where you get different veins of cheese? Or cheese orchards where the trees produce little cheese ball? And an area of fondue lakes and geysers... Don't tell Alanna where it is or she'll eat it all and it will be gone forever!😁

I also had my laser via LVC. I had the famous Prof Dan Reinstein and obviously I had many Qs and was disappointed by his attitude tbh. He disliked me asking so many Qs and advised maybe I shouldn’t get it done if I had that many?! Thought it was unprofessional of him as they fall over themselves to say you should ask Qs so you make an informed choice. Anyway for a variety of different reasons I did go ahead with them and although I needed an enhancement second surgery to correct the original and essentially tweak the eye I’d say it was worth it. I had times where my eyes experienced stabbing pains and became dry for extended periods whereas previously I never ever used eye drops. I was annoyed they didn’t tell e you lose ability to contrast see in darker vision and the nighttime starburst effect unfortunately is permanent. Also the floaters in my eyes went from about 1 in each eye I was aware if I really really focussed to multiples immediately after which was pretty distressing. Also reading i feel is a little more ‘difficult’ as your eye muscles are doing the work as opposed to being essentially inactive and a lens taking care of it. That said, their equipment (only one in UK that could treat my astigmatism with proven results) and follow up care is second to none. I actually had mine done 10 years ago now at 40 and I’m still going strong. So knowing what I do, would I have still done it? I’d say yes even though for first year or so I felt I’d made the wrong choice. The hassle and time consuming hygiene steps associated with inserting and removing contacts every night is fantastic. It’s removed the possibility of the daily mechanical irritation my eyes wearing contacts were suffering. I was like a minus 10 and so my glasses were very thick even when thinned to their minimum and it really made me feel self conscious in my public facing job. So that coupled with my eyes starting to suffer wearing lenses is what made me consider lenses in the first place. So all in all I think it was worth it. Def do your research. The LVC is pretty costly but they have the team, equipment and aftercare to justify those Harley street prices.

23:30 Oopsy! 12 YEAR appointment? I think you meant to say 12 month appointment 😀 I've been thinking about getting this for a while as I have 2 different prescriptions for both my eyes. One is much worse than the other, consequently my glasses lenses have to be different thicknesses to compensate. Thank You for this comprehensive video, you've gone through all of my questions & allayed some fears. 👍

I got lasik in 2012. Had custom view in the right eye. And PRK in the left. Now at 12 years in? My right eye is still pretty good? Like 90 out of a100. My left is about at 65 out of 100. My left eye I’ve always seen starburst and ghosting effect. I’ve always has issues with my left eye after the surgery. Eye styes and weird ups and and downs I’m my vision on the left. I’m gonna try and go in for an enhancement. And hopefully since I’ve had it done for 12 years now? So hoping for good luck.

Interesting video, well made and very informative. Some cheeses for you to try. Casu Martzu from Sicily, which you eat with the maggots that live in it or Epoisses de Bourgogne thought to be the smelliest cheese in the world. So smelly it is banned from public transport in France. Now that's an idea for a video

I once bought a Petite Breton cheese at Sainsbury's, which was very mild and didn't really smell at all, and hopped on the bus to go to a friend's wine and cheese night a couple of miles away. By the time I reached my stop, people were openly commenting "what on earth is that smell?" 😳

Vision Express diagnosed cataracts in my eyes (one worse than the other) about 11 years ago and I had a free cataract op on the NHS and after my vision in that eye had cleared they agreed to do the other eye more or less straight away. Injections in the eye are pretty freaky and both operations were 'handled differently - the first one much easier on the nerves than the second oddly enough. The op was physical - a scalpel job I guess - and a new lens was inserted at the time. Recovery time was more than four days but I went from short sighted to long sighted in one fell swoop. My only regret is that I now find reading very difficult. Whereas previously I couldn't tell what number bus was coming but I could read in low light at any distance from 3 inches to 2 feet and at any angle, now, with reading glasses, reading is a faff. I can't read in bed anymore. I'm very sad. About 2 or 3 months after the op I was getting bad 'floaters' and other visual abberations. This was fixed with a laser (the first involved) in two minutes in hospital on the same day as my last post-op examination.
