It is actually pivoting on a needle point. So slant is not much of an issue unless it becomes a steep slope.

How is this different than say a Bosch GPL 5S? Except it's more difficult to set up, not as versatile and the plumbing mechanism is exposed to the outside?

OMG! I used to own a table just like that. Laser Plumb Bob.."GOOD...GOOD...GOOD" The most often word said by land surveyors. AWESOME TECH there ,, yes sir re "BOB"

The issue I see is that this appears to only pivot on one axis so if the surface is not level in the other direction, you are not going to get a true vertical plum location.

Incorrect. The pivot point is a sphere. Gravity can pull the tip perfectly down (zenith) = plum.

I really need the opposite of this. A plumb bob that hangs from a string and shines a dot on the floor. Been looking for years...

berntd, The Laser Mark unit is also designed to suspend from a string and it is included with the unit. I bought it to hang from building steel and place a dot on machine panels from overhead locations. The string is lighter than most used for plumb bobs while the plumb bob itself is heavier brass than standard ones. It seems almost too heavy for the included string. The plumb can be removed from the stand, has a threaded string attachment, and can be suspended like any other plumb bob. Unlike standard plumb bobs, the string attachment replaces the point and the large end points opposite the string. It is a bit strange to look at since the tapered end is the attachment point. You are right about a string suspended laser being rare. This is the only plumb bob I have seen with a built in laser since I retired. @22 seconds in the video you can see the string included.

Ohh, now I MUST have one like it!! I want to use it to transfer car chassis measurements to the floor. It is painful with a normal plumb bob.

Thanks. I saw that but the status ther eis 'unavailable' and there is no timeframe for re-stocking. Doen't matter. I 'll keep looking. :-)

The battery was difficult to remove from the unit and I use a magnet since the battery tightly fits the unit. I never leave a battery in such a device due to corrosion. Corrosion which has ruined many flashlights over the years and an occasional remote control. There is no on/off switch. They do not make this unit anymore that I know of.

Ben K The Bosch is much easier to set up and the batteries are bit tough to find on this one for replacement. On "off" switch would be nice too. It is machined from solid brass so it settles in nicely. Other than that it is easy to see why they do not make them like this anymore. I picked this up at a garage sale for $10.

The laser is also a plumb bob which can hang from structures and paint a dot on the floor easily from a 100 ft. The point swaps out and a string slot fitting threads in to suspend it. Nylon construction string was included with this model. The laser is inverted by this means. It has been a while, I wonder if they even make these anymore. The brass is heavy and this would be quite a heavy projectile if dropped from even 30 ft.
