@MarvinsDadd It's a Class IV LASER, which is classified as a fire hazard. "Super Duper" is the term you should use when describing it. It's uses 3 diodes that are collimated to create one very very strong beam. We can't see the beam with our goggles on, we just practiced knowing where the beam was and were EXTREMELY CAREFUL. This is over 3 Watts of Optical power (not electrical).

Negative. Straight out of the camera. The auto white balance setting I had it on didn't really know what to do when the room was flooded with 445nm. There wasn't a "Laser that burns stuff" setting.

Yes. This affects the value of flux... or radiation per unit area. Since this laser diverges, the closer you are the higher the flux on the illuminated spot.

Now to the reason why the white took longer is not due to scattering, but to diffusion. as Johan said, it does not absorb as much energy, just like shirts in the summer, white shirt lets you keep mostly cool and a black gets hot really quickly in the sun.

@MOEPBIBER In this case that white one had something written on it, normally the white ones don't pop even when you hold them in long enough. They loose enough of the heat by conduction/convection not to pop.

@Xxnightwolf66xX The heating that popped the balloons is related to the power density of the laser. How much power you have per area. The laser here will be slightly divergent, so the spot size will increase the further away you go. I'm sure you could see the laser for miles, but at that distance the spot size will be much bigger, so you won't get the same localised heating to pop the balloon.

@korvys
@korvys 12 жыл бұрын
@mrrsmurf The white ones don't pop because they are light, but be cause they scatter all wavelengths of light. A red balloon scatters only red, and absorbs the others (and heats up and pops). A blue balloon scatters blue light (like the laser) but not perfectly (the colour must be slightly off) so only absorbs a little.

I think you could make a few hypotheses about the length it took to pop the balloon, the white obviously took the longest, the blue next, then the turquoise, not sure about the rest of the sequence but I think if you looked at them, the ones that reflected the most blue/violet light would last longest (white obviously being the most blue), so I would expect cyan and magenta to perform very well, but yellow, red, and green to perform poorly..

@yudy92 I think that particular one in the video would cause some serious damage, Right at the beginning of the video they were making sure it was aimed at a brick wall. Lower powered lasers wouldn't do anything, but something on that scale yeah I think it might leave a mark.

***** not if you have a strong laser.
@mrkiky
@mrkiky 10 жыл бұрын
***** Depends on the reflectivity rate of your laser's particular wavelength, the heat dissipation capabilities of the mirror as well as its melting point. But in any case, I assure you a kevlar vest has a much higher absorbtion rate than a mirror. Say you have a 1kW laser. Only 50W will be converted to heat and the rest reflected. If your mirror can dissipate that it will stay intact for any amount of time. A kevlar vest will be heated up with probably ~900-950W and start breaking down when it reaches 500 deg C. Of course if you have a powerful enough laser you can melt and burn anything because there isn't anything with 100% reflectivity. It's just a very very ineficient way to do it as 95% of your energy is merely reflected away.

Destin, when you are wearing those high-dollar "laser shades", does it render the "beam" completely invisible to you? If so, I have wondered about the utility of wearing such eye protection if your work requires the physical manipulation of optical elements within the beams pathway (optical alignment, filter effects etc)? I have two small He-Ne lasers, scavenged from analytical devices, but I am reluctant to "play around" with them until I know more about beam safety protocols. mrc109

The blue and turquoise balloons took noticeably longer to pop. Thicker latex, or does it have to do with color/energy absorption?
@matthewgrimsley4506
@matthewgrimsley4506 9 жыл бұрын
RonJohn63 You see the "colors" (wavelengths) that a surface reflects (generally); so, it's absolutely because those balloons are reflecting more of the laser's light and absorbing less and therefore heating more slowly. Although material thickness, differing materials, and differing stability (of their hands) may have had a significant effect on popping time.

I’m interested in what happens if you put the closing, knotted end of the white balloon into the laser. Although white scatters the light, there’s much less „space“ for it to scatter in the knot. So it could potentially still heat up and weaken/pop on that end then.
@233kosta
@233kosta 11 жыл бұрын
If it was transparent to the colour of the laser, there would be no thermal reaction between the beam and the balloon. Eventually, the air inside the balloon would get hot enough to expand beyond the balloon's tolerance and it would burst, but that would take a while depending on the laser.

@mitchem890 If you had a blue balloon scattering exactly the specific color of the laser it wouldn't pop. But in practice every balloon has some absorbtion, even blue balloon that scatter only the blue light still absorb more blue light than a completely white balloon.
