I spun the wheel again and I got Laserdisc! A video format im really interested in. I love the look and feel of Laserdiscs and I really wish I had them when I was a kid in the 90s.

Was never aware of laserdisc until my brother was buying them from eBay about 7 years ago. It's a technology of time that completely passed me by.

Never had one back when they were relevant, but I remember seeing one in our college library. The idea of the 12" disk intrigued me and it stuck with me rattling around my head until one day maybe 10 years ago now I found some disks at a car boot sale. Chatting to the seller I soon bought his entire collection and player. Fast forward to today and I've since moved that player and a lot of the disks on but have 2 other players now and more or less all the disks I'd want to own. It's a fascinating format. Despite being on a disk and read by laser, it is an analogue video format. 60 minutes per side for clv or 30 minutes for cav disks. Your dracula side 3 might be cav, constant angular velocity which essentially means one frame per track (per revolution of the disc) allowing you to get a perfect paused still image or even play back in slow motion or reverse all perfectly smooth. Sorry for the long winded comment, I could talk about laserdiscs all day 😅

I remember going past an electronics shop as a kid and seeing a massive disc in a window. I always thought it was a massive CD. However years later discovered it was showing the size of a laserdisc and advertising them. Never had one though. My uncle had a lot of Betamax tapes including a Beta tape filled with episodes of Bottom

Back in 97/98 I visited Cash Converters (one of my fave places at the time) in Watford. They had two large packaging boxes full of Laserdiscs and wanted £50 the lot, I’m so disappointed younger me didn’t have money and buy them!!

Wanted a laserdisc player when I was a kid but by the time I had my own money DVDs were coming onto the scene. I do remember a store in town that had them, possibly Our Price. There was rarely a lot of space devoted to them though. Like a couple of drops of discs. I think mostly cos they took up so much more room than VHS which was actually selling well. Part of the reason vinyl faded to CD was simply because stores could stock multiple times the amount of stock in less space. More stock, more sales. Laserdiscs are easily the best of the "failed formats" though. Although that's mostly cos they didn't really fail. They were around for quite a while. Just never became mainstream.

I ended up with a few VCDs in the preDVD days and that really felt like the future watching them on my PC Laserdisc seamed to do a far better job they were crazy expensive. Your right about them being LP sized and having great to see the covers on them.

Pretty decent collection you got there, Dan. A few titles i have myself, i would love that tales from the darkside one though just for that beautiful artwork alone. Its definitely worth saving up for a decent player. Mine was a huge cost but I'm glad i didn't settle on a cheaper player for the reasons you pointed out. I was aware of laserdisc (even the name is cool) back in the day but didn't know anyone who had one nor can i remember ever seeing them for sale here in UK. So until the internet age i just assumed it was an American thing. But it quickly became a grail and many years later something I'm pleased I've invested in whilst i can.

A nice collection there! I hope you get a LD player some time but having said that I have kept my LDs but sold the player on. Sadly I found the video quality being not as good as DVD (yet alone superbit DVD or BR) that I just liked them for the huge covers. And so yep, these days I have a few hundred LDs but no player. It's nice to get them out when watch the DVD or digital because as you said, such large artwork etc, it really helps feel that you 'have' the movie. I read that in the states in the early part of the 2000s people couldn't get much for LDs in thrift stores, so for a while many people cut the covers up and made artwork to hang on the wall or maybe a wall of LD front covers! As usual with retro, the prices have gone up these days so haha I wonder if anyone reading this cut out Rambo and now regrets it lol Get yourself a few more Gatefold LDs though. I also find LDs great to store scripts inside, you know the original press release packs they sell sometimes. My fav LD is Lord Of Illusions and Hard Boiled (Cop). For music I have Thomas Dolby (so good him singing and playing 'One of our Submarines' live). My dad had a LD player (but kept it in 'his' spare room and wasn't for the family at all lol Rambo was an early purchase of his, and now I see why). I also have like the most disc rotted disc ever (I think it's Leathal Weapon) so I've kept that to show friends just how bad disc rot can get, kind of a cool thing in a weird way (since like most, Leathal Weapon is so cheap as a movie set on BR now). Oh and an expert might state this below, but I think there was a fact that James Cameron's The Abyss for the longest time was better audio on LD than even the DVD release. Not sure, finally after soooo long waiting, it's out on BR but wow! Thanks again, and yeah, don't feel bad not having a player, it's nice to pick these up cheaply just to hold while you watch a digital stream or DVD, really makes it feel authentic! Sorry for the longwinded comment!
