I think the size of laserdiscs is why they never took off not so much being they coudn't record. Another problem with laserdics is the movies were split on the two sides. DVD's defnitely learned from these limitations.

Leonard Maltin would have been an interesting choice to replace Gene Siskel. He was well known to tv viewers because of Entertainment Tonight and had written movie review books. I don't think he was ever in the running because Ebert wanted an unknown he could dominate and the Siskel & Ebert producers were wanting someone from Chicago they wouldn't have to fly in every week.

Later in 1997, DVD was the future of home video. Then in 2006, Blu-ray becomes the future of home video. Now, Ultra HD Blu-ray is the future of home video.

@@nikosvault Dude streaming has been the norm for a while now. Samsung doesn't even make Blue-Ray/DVD players anymore.
