There was a real elegance to the routines from the winners of the 2000 and 2004 games. I think the open-ended era ruined men's floor exercise in particular because they're expected to cram so much acrobatics into a 70 second routine for maximum difficulty level.

From a viewers perspective, I get it, but from an athletes perspective I loved the open ended scoring. It allowed me to be as creative as possible. So many people had the same routines before the open ended scoring because they just did whatever got them the 10, easiest.

@@Alpen83 He's so light, elegant and with a perfect technique. And to think that severely bruised the talus bone in his ankle in March 2004, but made a full recovery in time for Athens and in 2007 broke both his legs, made a quick recovery and came back to competions!

It still hurts my heart that Jake Dalton didn’t stick his landings in Rio his floor exercise was a masterclass in athletic artistry, strength, flexibility, and gymnastics with perfect form.

I found Zou Kai’s routines to both be really unsatisfying. His landing technique is terrible and his routines were crafted to abuse ways to avoid landing deductions. Comparing him to Shewfelt makes this so obvious.

Surprising, he was unsteady on some landings (objectively verifiable if you re-watch) and his routines were kind of boring (this is more subjective).. Igor's landings were flawless (objectively verifiable) and tumbles are smooth and his routine's most interesting.

I think it's cool when they make a floor pass, get to the corner and then reverse it and flip backwards. You never see this anymore in mens or womens floor routines...I wonder why

And that's not hard floor as well, there are springs underneath it - of course it's not like a trampoline as it shows. They wouldn't get as much height on hard floor and some acrobatics are impossible out of a spring floor. So that's why it doesn't count for high jump records

I truly don’t think it was the worst, obviously this year in the final everyone made mistakes even Nikita made a huge mistake, but if u take a look at artem routine from qualification it’s an amazing routine..

@@lihiguttmann787 I am comparing Dolgopyat to gold winners of 2000 and 2004 Olympics and not to other gymnasts of Tokyo, I happen to think that Zou Kai ( winner of 2008 and 2012) didn't deserve his medals either . In my opinion, if all finalists make mistakes then the medals should not be awared for that year so as to preserve the standard of Olympics. There should be a minimum standard for sure.

Nobody comes close to Igor Vihrovs , he's so smooth and flawless. The remaining 4 look inferior, most of them didn't stick the landing always and the routines were so boring. All Olympic golds are not equal, in this case 2000 Olympic Gold trumps others..

Not comparable. Some elements of her routine are indeed more difficult than what these men did, but she would have to do 5-6 passes+1 non acrobatic element (instead of 4 passes). Plus, this was before the new code regulation, where men were required to do one roll in element, which was banned in the women code.
