New Zealand Rocks Downunder

Күн бұрын

Last day of our South Island trip due to a ferry cancelation meant that we were under the gun to find that elusive Pounamu before time runs out.
Serpentine Beach lived up to its name with truck loads of the green stone littering the beach.

my auntie and uncle were prolific greenstone hunters in the 50's 60's and 70's around the Hoki and Marsden area. ive got photos of them with giant boulders of greenstone being wieghed up in Hokitika that they found . I donated them to the Hokitika museum 2012

I've found some amazing pounamu in various places near hokitika. if its grainy, it green quartz. most of what you found was serpentine. Take a knife. if you can cut the stone, its not nephrite jade. traditionally you rub it on your face to get some oil on it to check it out.

Thats a great beach to walk. Loads of serpentinite, and lots of other green rocks, which can make it a bit confusing. There are green jaspers, schist and even green quartz. I live just up pastGreymouth at Rapahoe and find the odd bit of pounamu here too.

I like watching Gold Pan Vids, you need rock cutters for greenstone backup. I thought about printing Tshirts in 2002 for a Winz Business Grant,

Just a heads up, New Zealand Nephrite ranges from around 2.94 - 3.05 specific gravity. If you were getting 8, something is drastically wrong. Serpentine should be around 2.6. Semi nephrite may be up around 2.8-2.9. I’d suggest having another go at the testing 👍

You are correct 2.8 is what I meant my recall memory is not that great at times since my head injury. It was the 8 I remembered.

Thanks for sharing. I'm coming over from Perth to the NZ West Coast and promised my daughter I'd find her a piece of NZ Greenstone. Is anyone allowed on that beach? Thankyou
@NewZealandRocksDownunder
@NewZealandRocksDownunder 6 ай бұрын
The beaches on the West Coast of the South Island are free for anyone to fossick. Good hunting. Some of the Greenstone shops have beach finds on display to give an idea of what to look for, some will identify your finds if one asks nicely.

It was a real concern the whole trip that the ferry would be cancelled as it kept breaking down stranding thousands of people and vehicles. When we were offered the earlier booking we snapped it up.
