The beautiful church was equipped with "Kneelers"-- not to rest your feet on, but designed to kneel on during prayers. Since it was once an Anglican church, these were common. Also, the pews with the little doors designate "family pews". Families paid for the spaces. It was a way to donate to your congregation, show others you have donated, and guarantee your seat.

I love Bluffton! Great places to eat and shop. The historic homes are amazing. My favorite place is the old church built in 1854. If you talk to one of the volunteers there, you will learn some amazing things about its history.

You are correct Adam, the horseshoe pointing up is good luck. If the horseshoe is pointing down all the luck runs out. The pews don't actually have footrests, those fold down so you can kneel on them.

Years ago Bluffton was a place you could afford to live near the beach if you could not afford to live at beach. Not anymore as prices are high and area becoming over developed. But a pretty and laid back place. Love the low country. Good show,miss the days when Adam did lots of shows like this one. p

In the church the pads in front of the pews are NOT to rest your feet on they are for kneeling on which is done several times during a service.

The cushioned piece near the floor of the pews are kneelers. At various times during mass we kneel down. As an Irish Catholic I spent hours of my life growing up kneeling on sore knees through mass! Also back in the day a family would pay a “pew tax” which was essentially rent on a specific pew which was why there were walls and a door at each pew. There were always some pews that had no walls which were for either visitors or for people who didn’t pay for their own pew. One never sat in a walled off pew that wasn’t theirs!
