The play in a tape measure is for accuracy in both inner and outer measurements. The play in the end is the thickness of the metal. When doing a outside measurement, you normally "hook" the end to something, like a board and get an accurate measurement. When you change and put the end on the inside, say up against a wall, now you are off, but since the play is the thickness of the metal, your inside measurement against the wall is now accurate.

Roughly, yes. But what is the spec for how much movement every single tape has to have to get that consistent measurement, no matter what tape you use? Just because there are videos about this all over, does not make it an industry standard. Some tapes move less, some tapes move more, some don't move at all. So if you're going to have to figure out how you're a tape measures, every time you get a new one, does it really matter that it moves on the end?

The tape measure has play to adjust the distance depend on whether you but the measure up to the gap or hook it over the gap. The play is the same distance as the width of the metal on the end that hooks on to stuff

I think the tape measure end moves to compensate for the thickness it has! I think it's for when you hook it to something like the end of a plank instead of pushing it against a surface, wall...

For me, that 50% premium for the Knipex pliers wrench is absolutely worth it. My tool buying decisions do take into consideration passing them on to my son, so that’s a key factor.

I agree with the concept but as a DIY-er, not making money with any of my tools, I go with the concept of buy cheap to mid range tools and I'm allowed to buy the premium one if I used the cheaper one to the point that it needs replacement. It allows me to expand my arsenal while also not overpaying for things I won't extract value from. It also allows me to pick the best premium tool that fits how I used the tool since I learned what I want while using the cheaper version. Having 2 different tools to do more is more valuable than having one good tool when DIYing

@@MagicBrownMan That makes great sense. Everyone has to find a balance between what they want a tool to do and how much they’re willing to pay for it. I already had a bunch of tools (some great, some not so great) before I started (slowly) adding more premium tools into the mix, which also allows me to be patient and wait for deals.

The Milwaukee is the winner for me between the two. The action, the dual bit, and the blade storage help it beat out the Klein.

I got like 5 of those fastbacks I use at work, but that Klein comes in handy when doing light work around the house. Mainly for that removable bitholder. Btw next time you're at Lowe's, you should check out their clearance section. They actually have a lot of good, ridiculously discounted tools there. Last time I was there they had a varitey of Wiha pliers on clearance. Nice vid as always Dom and happy father's day bro!

Just a word of advice from someone who works with the locking pliers a lot. They are often referred to channelocks as that is the name of the company which makes the best ones

Fastcap measuring tapes, especially if you use a regular pencil. (More for carpenters than framers) The throw distance on this one is impressive though.

I like the tough built that's similar to the fastback. It's heavier but has a button lock screwdriver too that makes the one handed operation easier.

The reason the tape measures tips have play is simple... When pushing the tape measure against a wall per-se, the tip will be pushed in. When hooking the tip over a 2x4 to pull the tape measure along it to measure its length... the tip will pull out that ⅛" This is to account for the thickness of the metal hook/tip at the end of the tape measure. Side note: most tape measure housings that hold the wound up tape are exactly 3". So you can math out how wide a room is without bending the tape & guessing the exact measurement

The klein knife with bit driver and the Milwaukee equiv are made by the same manufacturer for each brand.

I definitely hear what you said about multitools and agree, but I also don’t know any dad that would be upset with a plain old Victorinox Tinker that you can get for ≈ $30 at any Walmart, Dicks, or Ace Hardware. Whether it’s going in the kitchen drawer or night stand drawer or center console or work bench… or they actually work it into their regular use system… just feel like a knife made in Switzerland has a powerful wow/cool factor and for only $30ish you can’t beat it.

The play in that millwaukee is 3-4x too much. But its so you can butt the tape up to something and have the same measure as when you hook the tape on something and stretch it out.

Cheap Coast lights don't come w/ rechargeable lithium batts so not great value. But $35-80 ones do, while not tactical throwers, they are durable and have flood and throw. Good value auto or rescue lights

The only reason I prefer the Milwaukee over Klein utility knife, is the Klein does not have a built in flathead. Only phillips.

The Milwaukee cooler is nice, however I would steer you to the toughbuilt cooler before making the final decision. Seems to be built better and a more manageable size for daily carry, but way over priced like the Milwaukee.

Everyone is listing the same point for the tape measure “ to help accuracy” but the main reason is to help it stay hooked on. Everyone’s hands twitches or moves no ones is 100% stable, if there was no play the hooking action would be much worse as it gives no room for error/adjustment and would slide off almost immediately at the slightest movement of the hand or tape measure.

The tape measure has play because it has to move in to but the end to a surface and move out to hook on the end, so it's the correct measurement. It moves to the thickness of the hook end thing.

@maxlvledc it's also good to calibrate your tape measure using a ruler or yard stick, because that hook can loosen over time and add a 16th/mm or more to your measurements.

Lennox has a plies wrench that's about 10 inch, but it's advertised as 3inch wide that I like for wide nuts and plumbing. I actually got that for my Dad, because he accidentally took mine home with him. I am going to trade mine for his new 1. 😆 🤣 😂
