I've never understood the fanatic following leatherman products have. I've got 4, and none of them are what I'd call really high quality, given the price. For me, a multitool is just something to use for a quick job. Tighten an expected loose screw, cut down some cardboard etc. No multitool replaces an actual decent set of tools. So I'm glad these clones exist. Leatherman have been taking liberties with their pricing for years. About time decent clones are available.

I buy Leatherman tools when I can afford to because I prefer to support American companies. I also know a few employees there because I live in the area and they're good people that I'm happy to support. Personal reasons aside, Leatherman's 25 year warranty is practically unbeatable, especially in comparison to a random Chinese company. Leatherman's prices are absurd, but they do make decent quality products if you can stomach their price. I'm glad companies like Daicamping are selling more affordable options for those who can't though. Hopefully they will push Leatherman to reduce their prices and design better and more competitive products.

@@brianriddle8389 I understand an American supporting an American business. I'm from England, and that mindset doesn't really exist. We generally just want decent value for money. What (limited) products I've had that are American made have been objectively poor value for money, and we don't have the drive to "support American business". A leatherman Rebar (which I own) is the equivalent of $100 dollars here, and it's poor quality. Every single tool has play, the plier handles have play. I'd never buy another. It's worth maybe, $40 at a push. I understand the point around lifetime warrenty, but when I can buy an arguably better tool for less than a quarter the price?? I've never broken any multitool. And if I did, I'd bet I was misusing it. As I said, I understand Americans supporting American products. But for everyone else, American made products are just not good enough...

The problem is, THIS model doesn't have locking blades EITHER! That was okay for a multi-tool in 1991. If you could actually BUY them, they totally would be! Space saving bits are a fantastic idea for a multitool. The whole point is to have a BUNCH of tools in a compact package, and making compromises on the usability of those tools to shrink them down. Compact bits totally fit that philosophy. I have used DL30 for about two weeks now from medium to heavy workloads and testing various components versus my Surge. In all the DL30 performs just as well as the Surge. The "T" shank saw works great it has held the blades securely with no issues thus far. The knife blades work well enough and used them for light carving and widdle work with no chipping of the edge except perhaps the need for re-sharpening but to be honest the blades do not concern me. The pliers I have used to pull nails, wire tie wrap, chain link fence, and tightening of bolts and nuts. I have found no issues with the plier head deforming or bending and the cutters worked well with no physical damage that I could see. The bit driver is one of the better parts of this tool besides the double sided bits you can use standard bits if you make some modifications as I did. I took a Klein 1/4" bit and cut it at the ball detent and welded it to a 1/4" bit extension I had laying around and added a magnet for extra security and it works like a charm. Now I can use standard 1/4" bits and have a small extension to boot. Though I have used this item for only two weeks longevity still remains to be seen. If you receive a good unit as I have you should not have any problems but if you get a dud your mileage for sure will vary. Thank you for sharing your views on this and is much appreciated👍. So I bought one a few weeks ago on AliExpress and have to say I'm fine with it. Just to share my first impression with you. Downsides till now are that it does not open very smooth, you need a lot of force to open and close the handles. If you loosen up the screws a bit, the outside tools start to wiggle. The other not so good thing is the sheath. I hate that the bits always get stuck on the outside rubberband pocket. Absolute annoying. I switched over to store the bits (btw a great selection) inside the main pouch next to the tool itself and now store a bit if duct tape and some small zip ties in the front pocket. Much better in my opinion. Last to mention is, that the plastic sheath in which the saw blades are stored broke. The blades poked thru it on the bottom. Tried to fix it by melting it with a lighter and pinching it with the pliers but it happened again. Will have to make my own sheath for the blades. Changes so far are that I switched out one wood saw blade and replaced it with a t shank metal saw blade and I store a bit extension on the side pocket next to the spare wire cutters. And I added a magnet in the bit holder. So far... Cheers from Germany!

Just started collecting multi tools and im liking this clone surge, my favorite part is the over sized scissors because the smaller ones on other multi tools kinda hurt when pressing down. The weight is on a heavy side and grabbing the sides I don’t think will have hot spots but will tell over time. I think $40 is a great price and anything higher for the tool is over priced. I chooses the “surge” over the “wave” mostly for the pliers and over sized scissors. Having all the extra is great with the different style bits. If I do get the “wave” in the future than the extras from the surge will come in handy if needed. Awesome videos. ❤ Love this channel. ❤

Something has to help keep costs down. I was disappointed a few years ago when I looked for a tool for my nephew's birthday and found a basic models that had roughly the same tool set that was on the PST I had in the Army. This was the Bond, which was kind of the entry-level model in that size that had solid sides. Unfortunately - as in the case of that PST decades earlier - the blades apparently do not lock. The ONE model I thought had kind of a "budget" price among Leatherman's offerings, and they design it as such as to make it difficult to pull the trigger on. We're kind of a Leatherman family so I went ahead and shelled out an extra $30-$40 for the next model I liked that they still make (my current model - the Blast - being out of production), but the experience kind of soured me on the brand a bit.

Okay, having used the DL30 for nearly two weeks I have to say I'm thoroughly impressed. The edge geometry of the blade is better than some high-end Leatherman blades, it came wicked sharp and has been quite useful. The scissors are incredible, they have me leaving my micro folding scissors at home. I have yet to abuse the plier head yet but I was surprised to see it was quite capable in handling finer tasks as well. The bit driver truly is a game changer, I don't think I have to explain why. To improve upon it I'd say I'm not a big fan of the angled end of the bit driver, that being said this bit driver really does shine when you slot an extender in. I want to find a ratcheting bit extender to accompany this kit, also a quarter inch to 4mm adapter to use precision bits. Onto the bit retention, I would say you can get away with 6x1mm cylinder magnets for non ball detent bits just know they can be rather fragile, you can kind of/almost fit a 6x2mm magnet that would have less chances of cracking (amazon, aliexpress and other retails have tons of sizes available.) I'm easily going to get more mileage out of this DL30 than any of my Leathermans, it really comes down to the bit driver accessibility, wicked scissors and the blade. I really need to find a pocket clip for this or a Kydex Sheath, I wonder if a sheath made for the Surge would work for this DL30? Otherwise these clones are a no brainer. It really comes down to price and that bit driver.

(question at the end) I'm definitely interested in the DL30. i was initially considering the Wave clone variant you covered, but I'm not a fan of the pinching problem and i wasn't quite satisfied with the tools. then i found out about the Surge and Garage 5, which got me excited. but I'm broke and $100-200 is a bit much to ask my also broke family and friends for as a gift. seeing a clone of 1 of the tools i was interested in, not just of decent looking quality but also including a bit set that's STANDARD bit size... I'm definitely interested. but it's still something I'd want to modify, such as adding a replaceable scalpel and grinding in a chisel. so I'm wondering if this clone is still able to interchange with parts made for the Surge (such as what ZapWizard does) as for the bits in the sheath problem... i don't think it'll be an issue. i keep my bits in a mini Altoids, which might fit without catching. and if it doesn't fit, i can just keep it somewhere else and put some matches or another such thing in that slot. on an unrelated note, have you considered doing mods for the Suspension NXT? i have 1, but i only use about half the tools and i haven't seen any mods for it. i want to keep the pliers (obviously), can opener, awl, and file, but everything else can be sacrificed as far as I'm concerned. i usually already have a blade on me and I'm not a fan of half serrated blades, so I'd much rather have a blade i can take out and/or a saw that i can also (preferably) take out. I'm open to other tools as well, if you're willing to do a video on it

When I had my first multitool it was 20 bucks. I practically attempted destruction on it without a second thought. Dropped it in acid, oh well. When it rusted the next day I put it in phosophic acid then dried it and dunked it in a cup of air tool oil i had lying around. Still works a year later. I decided a few months back that a multitool was indeed something I needed in my life so I bought a Leatherman Signal. Lol weeks after when I was standing over a sewage line I went to grab my Signal to use the pliers to pry the cam lock off... I stopped.. looked at my 120 dollar tool then at this sewage line. Looksd up to where the nearest tools were which were about a 1/2 mile away then looked at the sewage line again... I started walking back for some channel locks. I wasnt going to have dooky all over my 120 dollar tool. Point being is that even cheap tools have a place. Probably going to be ordering this soon as it will be perfect to me as a pouch or locker tool to bring out and carry when I dont want my nice tools getting destroyed or when I know I am going to be doing crappy jobs that day.

Update: Had mine for a week, and using your mod with the neodymium magnets I must say it is a really great tool. Going to buy a second one for my sister for her new place, as it has pretty much everything the average Joe needs for basic DIY. Leatherman products are more expensive in the UK (£169.99 on Amazon) so this £37.77 (after delivery fees) clone is 4.5x cheaper! Unsure how long it will last, but at the price it costs, I'd be happy if it lasts even 2 years, because it would take almost a decade of replacing it every 2 years before I hit the cost of a Surge, longer if I would buy the Leatherman bit kit to get the same bits as this can use for a fraction of the price.

Mine has finally arrived. Overall very pleased. Quality control appears very good considering the price and especially when the Leatherman Crunch I purchased a couple of months back (for a lot more money) has very poor QC. I recently obtained a very early, practically NIB Crunch from 1999 and its like night and day (all Leathermans I have from that era seem to have a much higher QC) It is incredibly unlikely I will purchase any new Leatherman any time soon. As for the bits, they basically need to ditch their bit system at this point, its expensive and sub-optimal. Really at this point its only the reliability question that needs answering.....

Hi Dom! there is a new Bibury version of the DL30, i think that could be the same mt with a different brand. Do you recommend it as a trusty edc tool? and mostly, do you think i could use the T-Shank adapter to mount it on my MUT, instead of the saw or the bronze scraper? Thanks!

Just got mine a day ago. Things great. Feels just as good as my flissa wave. I feel the biggest let down is not having a #2 straight edge combo bit which is the first thing I rectified. The second thing I've done is grind the knife tip down to make it more "stabby" since I didn't like the weird rounded tip. Next step is to see if I can add a second t shank holder for both saw and file since I just don't like serrated blades at all. I like my knives sharp. Not going to screw with trying to sharpen that crap.

I've been close to buying a surge for years and given Leatherman's attitude and actions over the years I held off. I considered other brands like SOG or Gerber and came close a couple of times. Considering that those other brands are only assembled in the US, the Arc's price gouging and mess ups, and the price points and certain design improvements of these clones, I have to throw them into consideration. 4:12 Is the tool to change the cutter a proprietary bit or a standard one? Will this clone accept leatherman cutters? Thanks for all the great videos. They've been helping me make up my mind. 7:24 OK, if the rest of the tool is on point I'm sold. Scissors are really important to me on a multitool. And not because I just want a really heavy and expensive pair of scissors. A good pair of scissors, once you get used to them, are better wire strippers for small stranded wire than the strippers made into the can opener. To see those scissors out perform the name brand is fantastic! 10:23 Could a Leatherman T shank holder be put on the clone? 16:58 I just checked. You can get the regular extender at normal price from both leatherman and amazon. The ratchet extender is out of stock on leatherman's site and isn't even listed on amazon anymore. Another win for the clone.

Man i have had the daicamping and I have used it around the house on a multitude of tasks, out in the yard, fixing things here and there and up to now, not a single problem. The blade cut great the screw sriver is amazing, i have sooo many bits that use with it that i dont have with the surge. Honestly i have not used the surge in a long time. I have given these as presents to friends and so far they love it. So this is a serious contender especially for folks that need a pretty decent multi tool but do not have the money to spend on a surge

Thank you for the video! It’s looks like an amazing tool for the money and also the flexibility it provides. Leatherman really needs to think about where their product road is heading. Moving forward …. Proprietary bits are out! Bits are a commodity! Bits needs to be cheap, plentiful and interchangeable with other manufacturer’s tools. The quality of the clones are getting better and better! I’m looking forward to hearing about the reliability of this tool!

If they made it relatively simple and hassle-free to order replacement bits the space-saving of the flat bits would be fantastic. As it stands I'm hesitant to use them for anything but the most delicate of jobs for fear of damaging something I can't easily replace. I don't want to buy an entire set because one bit got chipped.
@ayamesilver Жыл бұрын
this is 1 of the major reasons I'm hesitant to get a Leatherman that uses bits. i want something i can actually use and i can't afford to replace proprietary bits. bit size is 1 of the first things i look at when I'm looking at a multitool with a bit holder, even before looking at the other tools. if the bit converter came stock with any multitool that has a bit holder, I'd be much more willing to get 1. I'd have to save up a while, but i would if it was more worth it.

I have recently bought the Daicamping DL30. I have used it on a semi regular basis as a hobbyists to fix vehicles. So far, it has held up quite well, the fit and finish is not as good, but at the price point (I bought mine for $55 Aus + $5 shipping). It has held up very well, and the best part is, if I do lose it or damage it, I won't be out of pocket too much and can buy another. I already destroyed the Nexttool Flagship Pro (wrecked the scissors), and jusy ordered another one.

I have had or handled several clones and cheaper multitools over the years and not one of them compares to a Leatherman, Victorinox, SOG, or even a Gerber. I can see using a clone as an extra in a tacklebox or car but I'm always sticking with a known quality tool for edc.
@larrya197140 Жыл бұрын
That's true and that's what these clones are for, a tackle box, tool box, truck, boat, or office but imo mainly for people that can't afford or don't won't to spend Leatherman money, especially since they tripled everything and keep customers in the dark about anything new about their products, people are looking elsewhere and tired of Leatherman, so this is a great option, respectfully...

The DL30 I received as a vertical play on the main blade that could ultimately cause a security issue with the linerlock failing. Daicamping refused to change it. Instead they "offered" me a 6 dollars refund. They also told me that all their blade has got this problem . I can't believe that because the serrated blade has perfect machining tolerances and has no play. Good luck if you got a flawless one but be warned that Daicamping don't provide a decent customer care.

Those bits were always the Achilles heel of the design. With the multitude of different driver bits at every hardware store, it never made practical sense for proprietary bits that cost many times more
@reiisthebestgirl Жыл бұрын
One advantage (and only advantage in my opinion) with Leatherman slim bits is that they pack really flat making it possible to carry more bits with the tool. I 3d printed a bit holder that fits inside Waves pouch with space for modified extension that allows Wave to use standard bits. The holder holds 9 single sided bits plus one can be installed on extension making it fit 10 in total. It takes roughly same amount of space as two sleeves of Leatherman flat bits. One sleeve holds 10 bits and because they are double sided you practically get 40 different bits. Amazing capability for such small package.
