I am shopping at Center Point Mall every week, at NoFrills. Was there this Friday. Doesn't look like it is about to close. Working fine, like any other mall.

The Centrepoint Mall was originally known as the Towne and Country Mall in the 70s and 80s. At the time it was the outer limit of the urban retail district of northern Yonge Street. Its movie theatres were always full, I remember watching Police Academy, The Natural, Yentl, Streets of Fire and Bill Murray's Scrooge there. It had every retail chain-store imaginable at the time. In the opinion of many the destruction of the mall not only removes a meeting place for people, it also will void another monument of true Canadian culture.

I lived at Yonge/Finch in the 80’s for about 5 yrs. The area has changed exponentially with the rise of condo and office towers. Centre Point Mall, at that time, had higher end stores, and I hadn’t returned there for many yrs, until about 8-10 yrs ago. I was actually surprised the mall has more of those disposable wear stores. I did enjoy going through there, some of the shops I had never seen before, they were foreign. I was there last year again, just on a venture, and was surprised that it was being considered for demolition and re-development.

The closure of the Pickle Barrel is a great loss to this mall. In the mid-‘70s, it was the most convenient shopping venue for York University students, of which I was one, because the Steeles 60 bus - one of only two bus routes available in what was then North York hinterland - went right by it. The mall was much better then, with a greater variety of offerings, and two theatres. Ten years later, its biggest draw was a Bally Shoes outlet store, where, amazingly, one could buy Swiss Ballys for a fraction of their retail price. Now, the only reason I go there is to attend the antique market held on the Sundays before holiday Mondays.

I don't understand it. With all the condos going up all around, places like this will be needed even more. Why can't this development incorporate some of this retail. People will need a grocery store, pharmacy, restaurants and more. A park is nice, but nothing else but condos is a horrible place to live.

It's great to see so much interest in this video. I also grew up in this area and still visit my childhood house that my parents bought in the 50s. Towne and Country Square was a big part of my childhood - the many movies I saw there (especially Star Wars!), Sayvette (then Woolco), Miracle Mart, etc. I used to play on the huge mounds of snow they ploughed in the parking lot. Anyway, this type of mall is a thing of the past - it is car-centric, an inefficient use of land and at a key intersection that will have a subway stop in the future. It makes sense that they should develop it for housing. I think it will include widening and lengthening of Lariviere Rd to the south. (Check out the big empty field at the end of Fargo that has never been developed. It's probably next for more housing).

My mother moved us up to Willowdale (part of what was later known as the City of North York) in the late 60s. She felt unsafe in Toronto after a murder on our street. It was a harder ride downtown as the subway only came to Eglinton (now it stops at Finch). When my hubby and l bought our house it was next to Northtown Plaza (an amazing outdoor accessible) plaza that had every kind of store from chocolatier to furniture. Of course they closed it and to this day it remains nondescript. Suddenly (during the Harris days) TORONTO FOLLOWED us and SWALLOWED us and stability left the building. Now the last bastion of normalcy, Centerpoint mall, is slated to go. *Where are PEOPLE who don't drive, SUPPOSED to SHOP?*

I am sure they arent completely removed the mall....they may retain a retail chain there after they build a condo complex. In addition, there is a plan to build a subway line connecting finch station all the way to as far as york region. Thats basicly connecting the people living the area north of Steels. This means, more people, prices of condo units will jump up.....the other question too is, what about the old apartment buildings in the area? they are at least going to 50 years old...it wont be up for standard and eventually going to demolished...
