Last Days of the Southern Pacific Episode 6

In September of 1992 x-SP Pacific steam engine 2472 headed a special called the Earth Train. This film shows the positioning move on the first day between San Jose and the Salinas Valley. The actual Earth Train special would depart Los Angeles on September 22nd.

I have 2 N gauge Kato train sets, 1 is the Amtrak Superliner which now has 2 Amtrak P42 locomotives, a baggage car & 11 Superliner cars which is now the Coast Starlight & the other set is the Lima built 4-8-4 GS4 steam locomotive in Southern Pacific Daylight colors and the 10 car Morning Daylight set-that will be my excursion train. My planned N scale layout will feature Santa Fe, Southern Pacific, Burlington Northern, San Diego & Imperial Valley, Wedtern Pacific, Union Pacific & BNSF. My planned layout is the Pacific West Coast Railroad which covers from the San Diego area to the Vancouver,BC,Canada area which will also feature BCRail, Canadian National & Canadian Pacific as well & even some commuter service.

That Rio Grande power generator car seems to be an Alco FB unit!

Mabry, that is a rebuilt Alco PB1 unit. When it was a steam gen car it had the original PB1 trucks but those were eventually swapped out for a pair of EMD Blomburg trucks with no traction motors.

Whatever happened to those three Southern Pacific passenger cars on the rear California, Utah, and Kansas?

The three cars dressed in DRGW colors were actually owned by DRGW owner Phil Anschutz. After he sold the DRGW-SP to UP he sold the cars too and they are in private car service out of LA.

Are the pair of SP diesels acquired to supply electricity to power both the generator car and passenger train lightings? Was the SP 4-6-2 Pacific #2472 have been equipped with the MU control box in the cab for the engineer to control the diesels?

Sorry I'm so late in answering but I only now saw your question. The diesels were there to do most of the heavy lifting so to speak. The train was too heavy for a Pacific type loco to handle up the grade outside of SLO.
