DHI can be frustrating without a boat. Yes the long drive to steep point & back is rough & uses a lot of fuel, then you need a lot of fuel on the island because it’s 80 kms long. Then the barge at $550 (each way there & back?). But the Island lodge itself, is only ~24 nm each way from Denham. You COULD have just stayed in Denham at caravan park or even rent a unit cheap in town, & hired a boat & cruise across & back each day to spearfish a different part of the Island. Probably would have cost about the same! Last couple times I went, I took boats & it was awesome. You could take a hire boat from Denham for a week & stay at the Lodge with Keiran & Tory, and still probably be around the same $ outlay. If your into land based game fishing off the westerly side of the island the fishing is unmatched anywhere in the world, which is why people barge their 4Wds over there. Spear fishing just turtle bay etc, and the east side of the Island you probably didn’t experience the best diving that the island has. Yes fuel at $3/litre is expensive on the island but Keiran has to barge it over from Denham & that’s not cheap to do. Couldn’t meet nicer people than Keiran & Tory, last time we stayed a night at the shearing shed then camped out for a week at Whitnell bay just near Turtle bay & it was idyllic. It’s such a shorter trip in a boat from Denham than the long drive via steep point & barge. Your talking 24nm’s versus 500+kms & return by 4wd. It only makes sense to go by boat. The hotel in Denham is awesome for a feed of an evening. You will enjoy eastern gulf - that’s pretty good and the Francior Peron NP. There’s a couple lagoons worth a visit as well. Because we had a boat we went to Faure Island in the Eastern gulf. Shark bay without a boat is virtually lunacy. Stay at Denham, hire the boat and you can do western gulf & eastern gulf day about. The beauty of being in Denham, because it’s the peninsular that separates to enormous gulfs, there’s always somewhere within 20 minutes drive you can launch a boat and be on the leeward shore with an offshore breeze behind you to have flat calm water. Ahh the benefits of local knowledge.

Sounds like a perfect itinerary Ian! When we go back and if we still don't own a boat that will be a good plan. Our Jeep goes everywhere we go and I don't have my boat licence yet so couldn't have hired one this time but. Keiran is a legend, he's the one that told us about the amazing 4x4 track. Cheers for taking the time to comment 👍

Thank you so much guys! Few people have suggested it now ahah. We used to have an inflatable kayak but we didn't really like it, but maybe we should give it a second chance!

Hi guys nice vids ive been to dhi many times and i usually go for 2 weeks at a time and camp @ urchin point or the block dont know if you got to those spots as it is hard to cover the island in only 6 days but there is good 4 wheel driving on the west side of the island and the sand dune crossing through the middle of the island can get a big tough as after winds there are no tracks to follow you just drive approx 5 km and have to find your own way through and out the other side but to do these trips you will need a lot more fuel ,i have 180 tank plus usually another 80 to 100 in jerrys,love the place best land based fishing there is.

Hi Guys, Regarding about your fuel use, you use 80L + 60L + 20 L ?? or 65 L + 20L + 20 L ? as in your clip, you put *probably more like 65 L..
@TheOutFit4 жыл бұрын
65L or 70L (In the tank as it was just as the fuel light came on ) + 60L in jerry cans + 20l that we bought at the lodge. Hope that clears it up!

Just a comment about your brilliant video production and clever effective use of music in the episode and all your others for that matter. I have finished watching the unimog build series and I'm now catching up on the earlier episodes. Really looking forward to each one. Very entertaining Chris and Ange.

When you get to Exmouth try and catch-up with Brodie Moss for some spearfishing tips.
