Still my favorite aircraft I've flown in because every takeoff felt like I was in a rocket. There's something about those fuselage-mounted engines and that wing design. Combine that with the fact that one of these has NEVER been lost, it was a hell of a plane.

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) had old DC-9-20's years ago. Douglas only made 10 of that type. It had the original short fuselage of the -10 model but had the longer advanced wing of the -30 with the slats. The pilots LOVED IT. They called it the "Sport" because you could launch it off of short runways and climb like a bottle rocket.

The one and only time I flew on a 717 was Qantaslink between Ayers Rock and Cairns. I was on the back row for the entire flight with nothing but the engine for my view out. Watching the front of the aircraft pull up whilst at the back is something I won’t forget!

Yes, I have noticed that all of the derivatives of the DC-9 family tend to climb very steeply after takeoff.

procedure they taught us at FS-Boeing/Alteon was rotate at 2.5°/sec up to the PLI of 20° ANU until cleaning the airplane up to accelerate to the slat retract schedule and then climb IAS 280 [256 below FL100] to TOC at Mach .76 or whatever index you're flying [econ/std] Not sure why there is a perceived difference between flights unless laziness or if the airplane is really light you can exceed the 20° a bit, or about another 4° for a while. Then it's really a function of airspeed. We did have fun exceeding this in SNA for noise abatement departures to level early and cutback.

Fun to see/hear this video! When we moved to Canberra, from the States, in 1974, we flew on this very route, coming home from a visit to Sydney in November, 1974. TAA, DC-9; one climbed aboard the aft airstairs in the tail. We sat between the JT-8Ds, which were marvelously loud, and I was surprised at the sprightliness of the performance (I'd only flown on four-engined jets before this). About 30 mins in the air; you'd go up, level off, and start to descend. And I have noticed that (in later years) that the MD-80s (including an MD-88) do climb out nicely. Interesting to learn Boeing only produced 156 (I worked there until 2002, and was there when MD and Boeing merged) of what seems like a great regional jetliner...

This takeoff was following common noise abatement procedure used at many airports in high-density urban areas - a rapid, high-power initial climb to several thousand feet, followed by a power reduction and slower climb until the aircraft is clear of the urban area.

All depends on the payload the aircraft is carrying the aircraft engines would have to be run at full throttle if the airline was carrying a heavy load, this is normal generally take off thrust is around 60/70%. The fan speed would have been around 2500rpm and the internal fan would have been at 13,500 rpm to generate the thrust, The large fan you see on the engine spins at a low speed to suck the air in and the internal fans compress the air, this is why you have that unique sound to a jet engine
