I grew up in a small town, so the only places that rented movies and games were the grocery store and small town bar. Needless to say, the selection was pretty skimpy, usually giving about 5 games and 30 movies to pick from. The first time I was able to visit a real video store, my jaw hit the floor. It blew my little kid mind to see so many movies and better yet, so many video games that I could rent.

I’ve always wanted to go into Family Video. Great video John! My favorite memory was at Hollywood Video back in 1998 was into Lethal Weapon at the time and was also getting into other action movies. There I found The Road Warrior. I ended up renting it and the other Mad Max films. Changed my life forever.

Love the production quality of the video. Nice thing about Family Video, they always had similar lay outs. Now this location shown in the video is nothing like the locations around Chicago. They were mostly brick and had a brick and glass pillar in front. But this was my all time favorite place to rent movies from even over Blockbuster. They were family friendly, reasonably priced, and always had a wide selection of new and old movies. Family Video will be missed.

I miss video rental stores. Ok I can’t deny the convenience of streaming/downloading movies is handy. But you can’t beat the physical elements of going to a video store. The smell, reading the actual boxes. Loved it. I live in Southern England and I don’t know of any in existence in my local area.

I love video rental stores. They have a fun atmosphere and are a great place to explore movies. I worked at one when I was 16 and 17. Now, that feels like it was a privilege. Favorite memory: When working at a video store, I was able to get access to watch movies early before they released, get free posters and eat all the candy I wanted while working. Absolutely glorious days and ones I believe can and should be kept alive for future generations.

We needed this, John. And I think you needed this too. Videos coming from the heart like this one have cheered so many people up over the years. I still remember like it was yesterday, after watching your Mad Max movie night video and your movie room tour from back in the day I said to myself: "I love movies and I want to have fun like this guy when I watch them!". And that's what got me into collecting movies and having a great time with them. So, thank you John! Keep making videos about things you enjoy, we appreciate them. There's already so many people out there forcing themselves to do stuff they don't like. Videos like this are the real deal man, cheers!

Yay new video!!! Boy this takes me back. I loved going to video rental stores through the 80’s & 90’s... I even worked at a couple. Here in Canada we didn’t have many Family Video stores, and I think the last one closed last year. We had Blockbuster (who didn’t) but my favourite here in Canada was Jumbo Video. But even before they started franchising and going corporate, I really used to like the little mom & pop shops of the 80’s. We used to find the most unusual flicks... good times.
