Are you using beech wood?, looks like beech to me. I would probably glue up a block of poplar or pine because I can get it relatively cheaply and it is easier to work with (at least for my first few pairs of boots). I would trace the patterns on the wood and then use a bandsaw to get the basic shape before carving it with wood chisels. I am a woodworker and recently developed an interest in shoemaking. it is really great to see another craftsman at work and to learn from him.

The type of wood is some grain clogged, some hard, and then the cheapest wood. I also use laminated timber if I don't have large timber.

The grain in the wood makes it hard to see the curves on the cone section.
