long live, long-hood forward! interesting commentary at the start of this video regarding retired railroad workers being railfans. it is unique to do see someone do something so fulfilling and enjoyable, they want to be around it after getting away from day-to-day activities; some persons retire and never want to see their former vocations again.
@distantsignal6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I love seeing engines run long hood forward, though on CSX, it's really just running backwards. Norfolk Southern had the only true "Long Hood Forward" engines I've ever seen. I have several railroader and ex-railroader friends who are big-time rail fans. I've found that a lot of people get into the business because they love it. If you want to see proof, just come to the annual Jacksonville train show in February. Filled with railroaders.

My father was a Southern Railway trainman. The last 15 years he worked he was a conductor on a local freight train. The conductor has to be thinking all of the time to keep up about the moves the train needs to make to get over the road. The company didn’t want to pay overtime if it could be avoided. He retired in 1989, with 41 years of service. Things have changed since then.

We must always remember that locals are what keep the railroad suburban and city operations going. Even up where I live here in Montgomery County, Texas, there is a busy industrial park a few minutes away from me that gets a local and a couple of rock trains during the week if they aren't headed to Huntsville cement plants.

Back in the 1970s, I used to service vending machines to many of the industries around Edgewood and Ellis roads. My 5am start saw many 'Family Lines' equipment switching cars and laying down flares - this was long before the upgrades to bells, lights and crossing gates. My hometown and I'm proud to have you visit here Danny. God bless and be safe.

What ever happened to the EMD SW1500s the MP15ACs and MP15DCs? Have they all been retired in favor of GP40s and larger? I know the local short line close to where we live has gradually gone from the old G. E. U boats though they are still all four axle configuration and not six axle trucks on their engines. 6:20 what I dont get about american switching, is that the conductor has to walk all the way back to normal and lock a hand thrown switch. Why doesn't the driver hop out his locomotive and does it for the conductor? This would speed up things a lot as we do it here in Germany.
@distantsignal2 жыл бұрын
A couple of things. First the rules prohibit the engineer getting off the locomotive without someone else in the cab, or tying the train down. Second, unions. Each craft has its responsibilities and lines can't be crossed. Those are the reasons as I understand them.
@TheJaernvaeg2 жыл бұрын
Hi Danny, I much appreciated your answer, as you dit really fast! So, I See that the rules are a bit restricting, when it comes to switching. Different country, different style of railroading. Please keep up the fantastic work you put upon here. I've been looking your Videos for 5 years now, and as you see, jump back in the timeline from time to time.

Nice video Danny! Was it just a coincidence that the three GPs in the video were running Long Hood Forward or is this the normal practice for this type of switching?
@distantsignal6 жыл бұрын
Dang it!!!! I wanted to mention that in the narration and forgot. Not a coincidence. I don't know about the transfer train at the beginning, but for switching they often run them long-hood forward so the engineer is looking at his train. I'm sure part of it is also luke of the draw which way it's pointed in the yard.
@Canedave14 жыл бұрын
Hit the nail on the head there Danny. I work out of Moncrief on some of those switchers. Complete luck of the draw on engine we use. No matter what you work you will be running long hood forward at least half the time!
