My one customer has begun converting their light plants to LED. They boot up faster, they can install better lights for night working, and they are much less likely to blow bulbs moisture happening in the housings. So if you are having to replace bulbs I would highly recommend going that direction.

Damn straight on the gas F250 with no exhaust leak my 09 with 69,000 miles on it just had $3800.00 dollars worth of exhaust manifolds replaced a common problem. I know I’m like you in that it’s my truck and not really worth it but it’s my baby and it’s pretty cherry so I spent the money anyway.

Every year Penske pulls every one of its oldest model year trucks in the nationwide fleet to make room for the new stuff. Most are sold at auction or at corporate locations, some are traded back to International and the rest end up at auction yards. So basically thats the normal amount of trucks we get rid of every year lol

I run an ASV RT-135 Forestry Max for brush removal and snow removal, and I honestly have to say, I absolutely love it. It has a Cummins engine and the cab is a lot more comfortable than you would think plus it's got the best all around visibility compared to other machines. The bogie drive system that they use makes for such a smooth ride and it just has all the power that you could ask for. ASV is owned by Terex and headquartered in Minnesota.

Matt I service these diesel light towers often. Dime to dollar you have a bad capacitor on the pair of lights out on the unit you bought. I can tell you just about every single thing about light towers besides the intricate workings of the pancake generator. I think I've probably built one a tower light from top to bottom over the years. #1 problem and biggest pita just like many diesel machines is bad fuel, even worse diesel bug. I run into it so often that I built a fuel polishing machine to filter out water and solids from the fuel tanks. Anyone with as many diesels as you should have one. Once the moisture sets and the fungus starts sliming up the bottom of the tank your in for a ride. After I polish the fuel in the tanks I treat them with Biobor jf which is a biocide. Best stuff you can get. I put it in all my transfer tanks when refueling and large storage tanks. I also recommend a good fuel storage treatment for anything not running the tank down regularly. Hope this info helps. Let me know if you ever have any questions with your diesel toys. Trent

Dad always told me that if you were going to store an engine for extended periods of time, to fill the crankcase full of oil and put oil in the cylinders to keep everything from seizing up. Then you just drain the oil all out when you need to use it, but we're talking like years of storage. Maybe they were going to store the light plant for parts?

Fun episode, Matt! Truly, your saving grace is the notion that you really know values and you can get rid of stuff surplus to your needs. Plus there doesn't seem to be anything you need so badly that you'll overpay for it. Top it all off with being able to fix most things on your own. I'm not involved with this type of gear, but to me, a bulldozer or excavator needing new hoses all around could be a few-thousand dollar repair, and a bad cylinder could completely squash the deal.. It reminds me of me, buying and selling broadcast video gear in Hollywood in the 80's. It's a great spot to be in, as long as you can unload your surplus and/or your mistakes without too much damage.
