Ahhh so fun to see someone starting their Maas journey, she was my gateway into fantasy and I will forever love the popcorn reads that she provides. Throne of Glass gets amazing from book 3 onwards imo!! Also, I finished Funny Story today and had such a great time, Miles was sucha gem!! And consider me sold on Don Winslow and on that Kafka short story. Sounds like I will relate awfully much to that bug, ouch 🤣🥲 Hope May treats both of you well, happy reading!!

The two greatest crime novels of the last thirty years are James Ellroy's American Tabloid and Don Winslow's The Power of the Dog. Both are just overwhelming and immersive epics.

I only read four books in April: Deadhouse Gates - Erikson Gardens of the Moon - Erikson Revival - Stephen King Memory and Dream - Charles de Lint But the amount of fulfillment I got from reading Gardens and Gates in the same month is equal to that of many more books to be honest. I'm a full on Malazan dude bro now. 😂 Can't wait to get to Memories of Ice soon. Deadhouse Gates one of the most impressive epic fantasy novels I've ever read, and the series is supposed to get even better? Wtf, that doesn't even make sense. The Chain of Dogs . . . Like, are you freaking kidding me with how good that ending was?! I was speechless. The Power of the Dog is amazing. I need to read more Winslow! It only took me a few months of knowing Yolanda from the channel to pick it up, as opposed to six years. 😜 I totally agree about Legend, Yolanda. I really want you to still give Gemmell's Troy trilogy a try someday, though. It's the last thing he wrote before he died, and the difference in quality between his debut compared to Troy is extremely striking to me, and so interesting. When reading Troy I could just feel that this was an author at the peak of his powers after a lifetime of experience and perfecting his craft. It's such a cool thing to read Legend and Troy and see how an author started and how they ended, when the improvement is that pronounced.

Oh man Carlos you’re in for such a treat with the next bunch of Malazan books. They’re all so different. Glad the Morning Star reread went great Yolanda! That one is one of my favorite books and I can’t wait to reread it and the whole trilogy ahead of trying the sequels. And the Metamorphosis is indeed a classic tale but one I probably didn’t appreciate enough as a senior in high school. Lovely wrap-up here!

@@storytoob oh and I definitely resonated with how you described Nemesis Games and the connections we feel to the main crew and how this only deepens them organically. Next book does something very different with the POVs which I enjoyed as a break from the usual style, hope you like the conclusion of the arc!

@@storytoob yah lots of people seem to not like a mosaic book but I don’t mind switching things up, and it gives us eyes on all the different places relevant to the story in a way we couldn’t have with the normal amount of POVs

Y'all had a great month of reading! Thirteen sounded like an interesting concept. The Power of the Dog was superb. I seriously doubt I will read anything better than that this year but I am going to try! I want to read Legend eventually. I am going to wait until I find a copy in person. I have a long list of books I want to read but I am letting fate decide for me. If it wanders into my life I will give it a read.

That sounds like a great way to decide what books to buy/reas tbh! Legend is definitely worth a read, even though I found it to be flawed. The Power of the Dog reaching more people is bringing me so much joy!

Last year, my girlfriend gifted me Don Winslow's "The Power of the Dog" trilogy, and it hooked me right away. I really want to continue the trilogy. As a Mexican, it's really interesting to read about the interpretation of the evolution of the cartels. Winslow has made a perfect blend of reality and fiction, weaving in real-life leaders and situations. If you want more, there are many Mexican writers who tackle the same theme. "La Primavera del Mal" by Francisco Haghenbeck tells a story set at the beginning of "The Power of the Dog."

I just read The Power of the Dog per your recommendation Yolanda. What a great read! Great writing, great charater work. I'm older, and american, so I remember a lot of this "war on drugs" and how disastrous it was. He captured it very well. It really rang true for me. I will be putting his other books on my tbr. Great read.

Dunno if it was my mood at the time, but I lost interest in Legend pretty quickly and it was around the time the female characters were introduced... wait that sounds really sexist on my part, i mean i agree with Yolanda, it was showing its age 😅 April was another high quality month for me: *Fantasy* Tawny Man 2: Golden Fool Tawny Man 3: Fool's Fate - My new favourite trilogy! I'm taking a wee break to prepare for Rain Wilds but I can't wait to return to Hobb's writing. Fool's Fate is easily my book of the month and strong contenders for my book of the year so far. *Grimdark Fantasy* Sharp Ends: Made A Monster (re-read) Sharp Ends: A Beautiful B@st@rd (re-read) - Gearing up for a First Law re-read. *Memoir* The Disaster Artist / Greg Sestero & Tom Bissell - I don't usually like audiobooks, but this was great. I never tire learning about bts stuff of Tommy Wiseau's The Room. The film adaptation with James Franco does play a lot of the content in the book up for laughs, even the creepy and really toxic parts of Tommy and Greg's friendship (huge power and financial imbalance going on), and that's not even mentioning Wiseau's onset behaviour... *Thriller* Grave Descend / Michael Crichton - Kinda forgettable.

I assume The Power of the Dog stands well on its own? Or is there an overarching plot through the Cartel trilogy? As much as you love The Power of the Dog, I may start my Don Winslow journey with the Danny Ryan trilogy. 😅

Very much a standalone... He only wrote the second book 10 years later. It’s more of a standalone with a sequel than a series if that makes sense? Dandy Ryan is also very good so far!

Nice channel. Have some book recommendations for you, a mix of genres, short stories, and novels. I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream - Harlan Ellison Spectator Sport - John D. McDonald The Jaunt/Mrs. Todd's Shortcut/I Am The Doorway/The Last Rung On the Ladder/Survivor Type - Stephen King An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge - Ambrose Bierce Pickman's Model/The Colour Out of Space/The Rats In the Walls - HP Lovecraft Candide - Voltaire One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Ken Kesey The Lottery - Shirley Jackson Dying Inside/Downward To the Earth/The Glass Tower - Robert Silverberg Rosemary's Baby/The Stepford Wives - Ira Levin The Exorcist - W. Peter Blatty Practical Demon Keeping/Lamb: The Gospel According To Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal - Christopher Moore Hyperion/The Terror - Dan Simmons The Travis McGee series - John D. McDonald Forty Lashes Less One - Elmore Leonard King Rat - James Clavell The Keep - F. Paul Wilson The Maltese Falcon - Dashell Hammet The Choir Boys/ The Glitter Dome/The Black Marble - Joseph Wambaugh And then there is two series one SF one fantasy by one author. The Gap Cycle The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever - Stephen R Donaldson A caveat with these two is that these are filled with incredibly flawed and unlikable protagonists or anti heroes. A lot of violence. Cheers!
