Right. I think you're reading the "Hero Turn" wrong. Each round has two phases: the Zombie Turn and the Hero Turn. On the Hero turn, ALL the Heroes move more-or-less "simultaneously," and the zombie fight comes only at the end of that whole phase.

Each zombie only fights once per turn. if there are multiple zombies in a space with one hero, yes, that hero fights all of them. But if there are multiple heroes all fighting in the same space, they get to split up the fighting as they choose, as long as it's as even as possible. One more reason that "we should split up to cover more ground" is the worst idea ever.

Page 12 of the rule book: 4) Fight Zombies At the end of the Hero's turn, they must fight EVERY zombie in their space. ... Note that unlike in the Zombie turn, each Hero ending in the space will have to fight all of the Zombies there(after all, the Hero chose not to move somewhere else).

You guys are playing slightly wrong. When a hero ends his/her turn with multiple zombies in his/her space he/she must fight every zombie individually.
