I believe Jon Hassell was the most important jazz trumpet player of this time. All the other jazzers have been playing last-century's jazz. Hassel, by contrast, continued the jazz tradition of moving forward and innovating. I can hear the tradition of jazz in all of his playing and writing.

This quartet is a reason why i still i have a great belief in the love of music, why it should matter and in the greater scheme of things, why it should resonate in the heart and soul of all those who care about the simplicity of what life means. You listen to something that pulls at your heart and try to apply it to your thoughts and dreams, a simple philosophy that integrates and inspires. The cast of Jon, Elvind, Jan and Kheir-Eddine create the most wonderful sound that evokes the belief that i have.

As a jazz trumpeter I say with confidence Hassel wears Miles Davis' mantle of jazz-eldership. This is the Kind of Blue of the 21st century. He never plays a tasteless or indulgent phrase. A good man/musician plays the silence. The young lions thrash about with twelve-tones as though playing craps.

It’s the old rule that drunks have to argue and get into fights. The lover is just as bad: he falls into a hole. But down in that hole he finds something shining, worth more than any amount of money or power. Last night the moon came dropping its clothes in the street. I took it as a sign to start singing, falling up into the bowl of sky. The bowl breaks. Everywhere is falling everywhere. Nothing else to do. Here’s the new rule: break the wineglass, and fall toward the Glassblower’s breath. - Rumi

A haunting sound, which i first heard on a late night music programme on BBC Radio 3 in the UK about 12 years ago. I love the hint of Jazz, it's tempting to think it's the opening music to a film which has a scene with rain pouring on dark, cobbled pavements somewhere in Edinburgh, a streetlamp is reflected in a small, shimmering puddle, footsteps come and go, soft voices seep from a shabby window and there's a hint of a sharp intake of breath.......

I first heard him playing on the Talking Heads album Remain in Light almost 30 years ago.( Adrian Belew is a young monster on that album, also) I knew right away he was special. Beneath the Eastern splitting of the octave, I also hear a type of Miles Davis' In A Silent Way on this. He has also done some incredible stuff with Brian Eno. Perfect music for doing stuff without any words to remind you of basic mundane Earth. Put it on and give your outer mind a rest and let your inner mind have fun in the beautiful playground it will rarely get to experience.

Jon Hassell is incredible. Another artist who effects me the same way is Jeff Greinke, "Cities in Fog 1 & 2". Listening to both these artists' music while driving (portable isolation) collects the surrounding environment into an emotional event, regardless of what is happening. However, moody weather does help. What a treat to see this performance clip.

In my last ambient sitar concert I must acknowledge the tremendous influence of Jon Hassell .I make indian music the same way he makes jazz.More technically speaking , the simple use of a pitch-shifter at the fourth always give strange melodies.

Pitch shifts is indeed very special. Jon often used multiple shifts creating chromatic chords. Really his thing. He did this mainly with Eventide effects. But his embouchure in the mouthpiece in combination with the scales (very Indian) and pitch shifting make him so unique. Sad he is no longer with us.... His music stays though ❤️
