I remember all 3 when we visited Heysham just after they replaced the earlier similar named LMS ships which worked the overnight Heysham-Belfast route. 3 boat trains ran to connected with the overnight sailing, one from Euston, one from Manchester and one from Leeds.

I knew these ships well - there were three sisters: Duke of Argyle. Duke of Lancaster and Duke of Rothsea, the first two running the Belfast-Liverpool route and in which I travelled quite a few times, mostly on the Argyle back in the early 60's, only at that time they had the yellow funnel. If you travelled standard class, it ccould be hit or miss to find a comfortable place to spend the night journey, as the spaces allocated were quite small, having soft-ish large green bases to sot or lie on if you could; but they were never comfortable, and to get acces you had to make your way down very steep & narrow stairways. These areas were very cramped, measuring something like 20 x 20 feet, and holing maybe 30-40 passengers - mostly drunk!! I was a young teenager at the time, but had no problem with travelling on my own, but these ferries were really not the nicest means of travelling on a six-hour overnight voyage. Of course, these pre-dated the ro-ro's that were soon to become the standard, and were a great improvement. I only once booked a cabin, and I have to say it was spotless and very comfortable. There was no shower or bedside coffee, but they did give you call in the morning when the ship was nearing port. Ahh, those were memorable days which I do admit were fun in an odd sort of way. But for me, it had to be the Duke of Argyle - probably because I had been taken on a tour of her shortly after her service began. It's sad tp see this picture today, and why she is still retained and useless, I don't know, as shes is too far gone to be reinvigorated into anything useful.

BR also used to own the Scottish Island ferries that Cal Mac now operate plus the Lake District steamers on Windermere and these ships are all still sailing.

Thanks for posting this. Went past this last year, but didn't know you could get so close to it. Looks like coastal erosion happening on that coast too.

Sooo ... normal (ferry) ships run by British Rail? Compare with train ferries like the German-Danish _Vogelfluglinie_ / _Fugleflugtslinjen_ that, until 2019-12-14 20:02, was part of the Hamburg to Copenhagen rail route, at the end carrying three to five Eurocity trains in each direction every day.

Mostyn North Wales. From Chester, follow the North Wales cost road the A548 you can't miss it. Make sure you look at the parking times at the fun ship market. It's not the market it once was. Watch out for speed cameras.

I understand how you want to get fit walking, but if you're going to talk I would suggest walking more slowly (so you don't get out of breath), and playing the video at 1.25 or 1.5 speed. Cheers! ;-)
