F3 was a beaut. Spent Spent a day with 43sqn on an air cadet annual camp in 93 @ Leuchars and was allowed to sit in the back during systems and engine tests. I fell asleep on top of the port wing mount after waiting for a part and a heavy night exercise the night before. The tech scared the life out of me to wake ne up. Nearly fell off the damned thing. Haha.

It was a very emotional day when the last of the F3W taxied out of the 111 HAS site and flew to Leeming to be scrapped. I am happy to say some of them have been preserved in Museums around the country.

I love how at .30 seconds the Spitfire makes more noise than the Typhoon and the Tornado, it's kind of a metaphor that despite the different eras that they herald from - the Spitfire is still the top dog.

These lads used to fly directly over my cottage in Leuchars Castle Farm. I miss them.

Leuchars is still thriving with aircraft. Just missing the noise and swept wing element.

Considering the reputation of the F3. It got a much better send off than the GR4 did. Even been more books published about the F3 since its retirement.

I think the F3 got a much more dramatic end then the GR4 did, lots of tame fly pasts and that was about it.

The F3 was the fastest and most capable Tornado. Period. As a strike aircraft the IDS Tornado was average if a little short ranged. As the ADV F3 variant the Tornado was a very effective long range interceptor that was retired at least a decade early.

Wait a tick.....3:30, the exhaust - never seen that, although to be fair my familiarity with Tornado is casual. Can someone explain what this function is please?

Thrust reversers (aka buckets)

The f3 was the best Tornado. The strike GR Tornados should have had the same fore wing and fuselage stretch as the f3 to make them aerodynamically more efficient. The f3 was the fastest and longest ranged Tornado incidentally, we are not supposed to say that lest we offend the Germans, but it was true. Why so f3s preserved?

Much maligned (although, initial critcism was justified due to somewhat embarrassing issues with the radar) by many due to somewhat misguided comparisons with more agile contemporaries, but it did exactly what it was required to do upon entry into service - defend the nation from the threat of Soviet bombers - a task it was more than suited to given an ever evolving and maturing weapons platform. As former pilot, and Aircrew Interviewee Tony Paxton (formally of 5 squadron) remarked, you 'can't take a bomber and turn it into a fighter', but it was a mighty good attempt.

miss the F.3 but FGR.4 is a worthy replacement... F.3 kinda looks like the little brother to the F-111
