I like to come back to this when I need cheering up . I love how it portrays Yorkshire folk. Compo, Clegg and Foggy were the best and so amusing together. Nora Batty, Ivy, Edie and Wesley, Auntie Wainwright, Pearl and Howard I love them all. Rest in peace and thank you for the non-trashy TV unlike that which surrounds us these days.

I still find it hard to believe, after meeting Bill Owen (Compo) in person many years ago, that he actually spoke with a middle class Cockney accent in reality, but could do a beautiful Yorkshire brogue (Just like my own :-D) with no problem at all. I truly miss all these wonderful people, but in my mind, their bodies may have passed away, but their characters and legends will live on eternally :-)

For those not aware of it, this series holds the record for longest running tv comedy series in continuous production. The first episode was aired in the early 70s and ORIGINAL episodes were still being filmed in 2007...IIRC. Obviously, by the end, the majority of the original cast had gone to their eternal reward. This series played on some PBS stations in America but did not prove to be all that popular, I am assuming because it is a bit too gentle in its comedy. When I first saw this series I was " middle-aged ", now that I am as old as many of the cast members were when this was filmed...I find it even more endearing. Nora Batty reminds me of my grandmother, tho I seem to remember my grandmother as dressing with more style. And the men remind me of my father's friends who used to meet once a week for card playing. It was the same night my mother met with her friends to play cards, so both had nights out.

The best of this show were until Foggy left, the 70’s and early 80’s were the best, every episodes is like looking back to times sadly gone for good, if they were to do a new series now it could not be imitated, just like they tried it with Porridge and the film version of the Sweeney with Ray Winstone, no chance it would work.
