My grandfather was one of those who marched down this road. He would have known some of the names on the wall. A shrapnel shell went off above him. He survived but part of his skull remained there in the mud, and he had a metal plate in his head, and one leg was shorter than the other. Sone part of it remained beyond the Menin Gate. I am proud that we remember all those who couldn’t be patched up, and brought home. I am proud of all those whole come to remember each night. Lest we forget.

I was there years ago with my mother who cried throughout the ceremony. Drove through the area two weeks ago on my way to Westvleteren, still astounded by the number of cemeteries.

A wonderful video. My great grandfather served in the first world war and was injured in the battle of the Somme. The first redition by the combined bands is called "The Bells of Dunblane" and was composed in tribute to the primary school children and other victims in the 1996 massacre at their primary school in Dunblane Scotland. 16 were killed and another 15 injured by a shooter went on the rampage.

I think it should be a law that any politician who is thinking of launching a war should be required to walk through one of those Flanders cemeteries and read every headstone...most of them for kids aged 17, 18, 19...by the time they get to the end of the second row, any desire for war will be knocked out of them or they aren't human...

I travelled from Canada about 2 weeks after this was filmed. Went to Passchendaele, where a ralley race was starting. Then to Menin gate for the ceremony, where the ralley was ending. The ralley was a coincidence. The ceremony was moving.

The four buglers are from the Ypres fire brigade. That organization has provided buglers to play Last Post every evening since 1919, except for the years 1940-1944 when the occupying Germans forbade the ceremony.

Hi Katerina, you're welcome. The band with the bagpipes is the Belgian band 'K.H. Ons Verlangen Beverst'. The ceremony with the clarions is brought everyday at 20 pm by 'The Last Post Association' of Ypres - Belgium.

I need to amend my previous comment. After listening and watching the whole service I was a bit hasty in my comments. Not only were the bagpipes excellent but the whole band of musicians were excellent. What a fantastic performance. Who are they?? Men of Harlech was so appropriate. Brought tears to my eyes. Thank you.
