The MP 59 was a rubber-tired variant of electric multiple units used on the Paris Métro system in service from 1963 to 2024. Manufactured by a consortium between CIMT-Lorraine, Jeumont-Schneider, Alsthom, and CEM, they were first introduced in 1963. In their final years, the MP59s ran exclusively on Line 11, and were finally retired on June 12, 2024. By the time of their retirement in June 2024, the MP 59 trains were among the oldest trains still in use on any metro system in the world, at 61 years old. This video shows the MP59s making their last trips in their final days of service. Enjoy!

My late grandmother moved to Paris in 1967 where she lived for a couple of decades. She was always full of stories about the city, and the metro of course. I had the chance to visit the city for the first time in 2023, luckily got to ride on of these trains which would have been new back then.

@@metajore3580In the South West of France, there’s a metric line with 3rd rail, called “Cerdagne Line” it uses modern trains Z150 built in 2004 and also old train Z100 built between 1908 and 1912, they were refurbished many times and are still running now.

@@gandalf7292 is that just a tourist train, or is it actually in intensive general service?

I remember riding one of these a long time ago back in 2006. And looking at videos like this, I wish I had gone back to tide them once more. 😢 I loved the deep revving sound the MP 59's JH Resistor Controls made when they accelerated. 🫡 To 61 years of service.

Great video. I was lucky enough to ride these last October when visiting Paris. I knew their time was short, really enjoyed the flickering lights, they reminded me a lot of old SMEEs. The set that pulls in at the 5:00 mark, 6087, that's the exact set I rode. Also got to ride Class 319s in London while on that trip, which are also now retired.

Budd M3s still have lights that flicker, despite from the 1980s.

I was just in Paris in February and I am pretty sure I rode this rolling stock (though can't remember if it was on line 11)

Nice! They were certainly running a few of them in February, all on line 11. Line 6 also uses MP73s, which are somewhat similar.

This likely makes the PATCO cars (1968) now the oldest rapid transit cars in regular service in the world, though rebuilt to new.

Actually, the oldest trains are the Ex-Tokyo Metro trains running on the Buenos Aires’ B Line, dating from the 1950s, even though they only arrived in Buenos Aires in 1996!

also Kyiv and Tbilisi still use mid-1960s metro trains, although they are modernized

It is sad to see them go. When I visited Paris, I was staying right next to a line 11 station and used the MP59 often.
