You must still have a good drone population this time of year to be dropping cells. Here in MI they are all being kicked out for winter preparations.
@WalkintheWoodsApiaryVlog3 ай бұрын
@@davesatkowski8879 Yeah I was able to successfully mate Queen's last year all the way until November. August is a little iffy because we're in a dearth here but we get a spike in drone population during the fall.

Next time you get mass robbing like that try removing the lids from every hive in the yard. Once the bees realize they need to protect thier own the robbing will stop after a while.
@WalkintheWoodsApiaryVlog3 ай бұрын
@@billysmart5178 You know I tried that for the first time that day. I've heard from a few people that it works but at least in my opinion the robbing seemed to get worse. The the two hives that were getting robbed the worst didn't seem to improve either.

That doesn't work for me.. setting them on top I wait until evening.. I get to much of the older bees messes up my cells virgins or whatever I'm going to give them.. seems like they dead set on making their own queen. If I pull them off top In evening...I'm switching over to all broodless splits more mechanical type treatments between chemical treatments.. build bunch of bulk bee baskets and smoke up boxes so I'm not splitting my mites

I'd have more bees than I'd know what to do with if I lived in the south.This is crazy so me.

I agree, I believe mites would be the biggest threat since they don't brood back in the winter like in the north.

Do bees not see green light very well also?
@WalkintheWoodsApiaryVlogАй бұрын
@@jasonseaward8506 Yeah they can see the color green just fine. I have amber lights on my Bobcat which allows me to see better at night. Because amber is slightly in the red spectrum the bees see it less than a white light. It's still best to use a red light if you want to attract less bees but it's more difficult for the beekeeper to see.

I'm about a few hours east of you. First year running bees. Didn't do any splits this year being worried as all get out with your first hive and all. As of now, my hive is 3 deeps full to get em through till spring hits then split em all over the place to get some more hives going. Will be watching from now on seeing as how we have the same environment we're working in. Keep up the good work. And also, what's your advice on pumping out drawn comb?
@WalkintheWoodsApiaryVlog3 ай бұрын
@@killerkrakker7796 Congrats on getting your first hive! I remember it's very stressful for a while but if you hang in there you'll get the hang of it. I don't have any tricks to draw foundation. The bees draw for me during spring and if you are lucky enough to get a summer or fall flow which is less common here then maybe then too. I mostly make honey off deep boxes of foundation each year to make more comb. It will eat heavily into your honey production but it's the best way to make comb yourself.

So you put a cell in every spot? Do you find that the virgin hatches out and kills the queen or that a queen right colony will tear down the cell?
@WalkintheWoodsApiaryVlog3 ай бұрын
@@rtxhoneybees The original Queen will almost always kill the new cell before it hatches. Even if somehow the virgin queen hatched the mated queen will almost 100% of the time kill the virgin queen.

Are you going to try to make some cotton honey or just going to let them build on that

@@ricksutton2902 I just let them build up for splits and almonds from cotton. We're having a hard time moving our spring honey this year so I definitely don't want anymore.
