Take a virtual tour of downtown Seattle via our 4K UHD driving video on the historic Alaskan Way viaduct. The viaduct closes permanently on January 11, 2019. It will be demolished to make way for a traffic tunnel, dug by the infamous tunnel boring machine Bertha. Tearing down the viaduct will make room for a new waterfront, surface streets, and scenic cityscape views of downtown Seattle.
This is the last opportunity to take one of the most scenic drives in Washington state.
Video shot in 4K 60fps with a GoPro Hero 7 Black.

Have you ever driven the viaduct into Seattle? It's one of the best ways to enter or pass through the city, and the view will be missed by many.

This is so nostalgic already! A lot of times i would get out of the fastest way when driving North from west Seattle or on the way back, it didn't matter if the drive would be a few more minutes, the view was always worth it, especially at sunset on a clear day, it sure will be missed. Thanks for capturing the feeling!

The reminds me of the central artery that was in Boston. I believe they tore it down in 03. Was a beautiful site but this might have Beantown beat

I remember riding my motorcycle on a west coast trip and coming into downtown Seattle through the viaduct. It was a cool introduction to the city. Once I was actually at ground level though, I was disappointed by the waterfront. A city with such natural beauty with mediocre waterfront development. Coming from Vancouver I thought the waterfront would be just as good, if not better than ours. I went back last week and noticed it was gone, the area seems a lot better and the whole experience of actually being at the waterfront was improved, although it seems they’re still working on it. Looks like it was a good project overall.

I was fortunate to drive this road once during my first trip to Seattle (I drove up on a whim while in town in Portland visiting a friend). I made my second road trip this year to see CHAZ in person, and went looking for the AV specifically to drive on it and enjoy the view. Imagine my surprise to find it gone, replaced by cordoned-off areas and a well-engineered tunnel. There was nothing like the high-up perspective of the city and water; it reminded me of the FDR Drive back in NYC. The Alaskan Viaduct will be missed.

It was for sure the best way to enter Seattle. Sad to have it gone, but also nice that the waterfront area opened up in its absence.

i came to youtube specifically for a video of driving the viaduct. It was such a unique and memorable part of my 3 month internship in Seattle. i had no idea it has been tore down. Its kind of sad, it was such a unique feature. I felt it really captured the feel of Seattle. Im sure it created a ton of noise for nearby residents and it kind of limited access to the waterfront but those elevated views of the sound and city were something that was pretty incredible. I used to cruise the viaduct for hours in my free time, loved it. Things will certainly look a bit different next time i visit Seattle

Yes, it's completely gone now -- the waterfront and downtown look very different! I think most people had mixed feelings about it. Sure, the viaduct was an eyesore, but many of us (myself included!) have great memories of driving on it. Now you go through a tunnel with no view :-(

@@Gemini_Connect It was torn down because it was a massive risk during an earthquake - check out this potential simulation here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqDWkKh_gNx2Y8U. I miss the views from it, too, though. Super pretty, great shots of downtown and the Sound.

Thank you for making this video. Very very nostalgic. I was just down on the waterfront a few days ago and I really miss it.

Me too! For the eyesore that the viaduct was, driving on it was a real treat, especially coming into the city from the south.

I recently visited Seattle. Wasn’t aware this was here before. While the design was certainly intriguing and cool (honestly I kept thinking I can’t believe this used to be here), I admit downtown will be better with all that space reallocated to other uses. If only Austin would follow suit… widened highway here we go.
