My best guess would be they used the front passenger’s seat with Raj and Howard getting in first and climbing into the back, Leonard getting into the driver’s seat, and finally Sheldon getting into the passenger’s seat and closing the door. Then I believe while driving Raj has his free hand on the right side of the steering wheel while Leonard has his free hand on the left.

I wouldn't say most, it's not like things like Star Wars, Star Trek and Lord of the Rings were completely slept on at this point in time, and a lot of the games they played like WoW and Halo were at least pretty well known, but it is a fair point that a good deal of references would have gone completely over the heads of most audience members, especially once more advanced science or niche comics would enter the equation 🤔
