Hey man, I love the fact that you show your mistakes. I’m a person that learns everything the hard way. I saw your first job as a tree service where you used 3 ropes and all your wedges. I love REAL! Most people would cut that stuff out. I have a small sawmill and young KZbin channel and I too show all of the learning curve. Keep up the great work! I just ordered some wedges from sappy!

Star Wars nerd fact check: Forest Moon of Endor was filmed on the North Side of The Smith River, just north of Crescent City CA. The Jeddah Smith Redwood state park is on the South of the Smith River. Old growth redwoods. I used to live in Brookings, just north of there. Unfortunately, they logged that forest just after filming. Love the channel and all your work!! Ewok Chief Chirpa out.

After watching you and other I dropped my first tree today. In my backyard. between 2 houses... Probably not my smartest move as I messed up the back cut slightly. Luckily I hyper focused on my face cut doing an open cut. Dropped right where I wanted but didn't fully cut the back part. Probably my fault for using a small saw. Luck was on my side, and now I know for the future without having to learn the hard way.

I am in the same area so cut a ton of black cottonwood, red alder, Douglas-fir, and hemlock and the cottonwood is always the most likely go do something unexpected. Worst was cutting a 24” cottonwood in spring when the sap was flowing and the weight crushed my hinge and sat on my saw. Pretty similar to what happened in your vid. Wedges did no good since it was the hinge that squished like a sponge. I also liked the discussion and techniques on how far you can predictably send a cottonwood off the direction of its lean. Usually not much. I just imagine I am felling a giant sloppy wet sponge and then they do what I expect.
@stephendouglassd Жыл бұрын
You could try a bore cut straight into the kerf on the backside to make room for a wedge. Not sure if i explained it well but I used it once when my wedge popped out and the tree sat back, learned it from an old logger.
@mattfleming86 Жыл бұрын
I've done that!! The wood pops vertically up yhe grain and you are basically lifting a wedge and a "plug" it worked just fine. It's a great trick that I would imagine would work on many species of tree. Probably not elm or hickory.

Thank you for showing this. I had one sit back on me and I was like wow... WOW.. I guess I make mistakes too. I try really hard to look at a tree for a minute before I cut. Some guys can just look for 10 seconds and know. I cant yet I have to hug it for a minute and really look at it. Sit back is a BAD feeling. we have ALL had it.

Hey when a small tree sets back and there isn’t room for wedges and your bar, you can bore straight it about inch or two under your back cut. It will give a bar width cut just wide enough for a wedge, works wonderfully to get it lifted and going. I have pinched my bar the same way you did in the last month and used this method to get the tree to lift!

man I love watching trees being cut. I have learned alot watching your vids. Cut down a 20' tree this past weekend. One thing I know i need after doing that, is I need a bigger saw. Poor little 14" Echo was STRUUUGLING with the tree.

While watching you work alone, I was reminded of a time in college where one friend was doing some contract felling for the school and another friend with a logging background grabbed me to go with him because he hadn’t heard the saw running. Everything was fine, but the built in sense that no one else felt alerted him. Was glad to see that the home owner was on site for you.

1:20 The maple trees in my area definitely are way stronger than that. I guess that the environment that they grow in has a massive effect on how strong they are. Theses must be putting on a lot of wood every year. I'm in Canada, so the growing season is rather short. The winters that we've got are downright harsh with freeze thaw cycles that just bring on a mess of wet heavy snow that sticks to everything. The amount of weight that some of those trees are able to support is absolutely incredible, and sometime rather scary. My area is full of century old trees that are often tower over building.

Also, it would be interesting to see footage from a chin-mounted go-pro while you're cutting. Entertaining for us, and extremely inconvenient for you! You'd have to wear a mountain bike helmet or something.. probably not safety rated the same as a hard-hat. Anyway - fun idea to try as your videography skills increase. I love the HD video from your phone and the focusing.
