LAST TRIP OF 2023! | 46lb Yellowfin Tuna! w/

Summary:
Got to head out with ‪@AffordableWahoo‬ (Check out his channel) and Danny on the west side of the Big Island to cap off 2023! Despite a late start, some rudder issues, and water ingress, it turned out to be an action-packed day! Always happy to hit the water with the Big Island kayak boys, thanks for letting me tag along. Sadly there were a lot of misses too, but hey, that's fishing right?!
Kayak: 2019 Hobie Outback (Hilo)
Fish Finder: Garmin Echomap Plus 64CV (a.co/d/7pXJpP7) or 44CV.
Rods: Shimano Grappler Type J (Bait), Shimano Trevala x2, Shimano Tavalera, Ugly Stick Tiger Lite)
Reels: Shimano SpeedMaster 25ii x2 (a.co/d/8EkZHpP), Penn Squall 50LD (aka “the lucky reel” in Hilo a.co/d/4e1nOBL), Shimano Stella SW 6000 (Bait Reel a.co/d/1o3UXaC), Penn Slammer IV 9500, Penn Spinfisher VI 8500 (Hilo Main Reels a.co/d/9ES1yQQ), Shimano TwinPower 5000 (Hilo Bait Reel a.co/d/4nPNush).
Line and terminal tackle: 65-80 lb PowerPro (a.co/d/bvOGdsx), 40/50/60lb J-Line Fluorocarbon, 40-55lb AFW wire leader. Owner 4/0 & 5/0 circle hooks, Gamakatsu 6/0 & 5/0 live bait hooks (honestly, I found some cheaper Korean versions at J.Hara for 11cents a hook), Diablo or VMC 2/0 inline hooks for stinger when using wire (hifishgear.com BKK Lone Diablo Inline Hook - HiFishGear).
Damashi: Homemade using line between 12-16lb, typically J-Flouro Samurai. I typically tie my own flies. When using lures, I like Tylah lures or CHL Nox Minnows, both I set up with gold hooks and a red bead which I find to be very effective and highly recommend them. Devan, my first time out at the exact same spot where you were...a year ago...my Outback Rudder line came loose and I had to use my paddle as the rudder, just as you did...thank God I had the electric motor I have!!!! (That electric motor saved my ass). Weird how your hull took on so much water...not good Braddah! You don't want to repeat your PA14 drama. You guys all caught tuna that day...musta been a Shibi school cruising through and I would not be surprised if you all hooked up within 30 min or so of each other. Correct?

Actually no, Shea’s was like 20-25 mins after mine I think. Danny’s was quite a bit later in the day. But yeah, rudder issues are especially rough because it’s so hard to get to without just jumping in the water.

Yeah, was 46.2lbs. Decent fish, definitely enough to share with friends and family on the big island since I mostly fish on Oahu and we hardly share fish with everyone there. I didn’t figure out the cause. Best I could figure was the front hatch. I even filled the kayak with watch to try to detect underside leaks and none really turned up. You know, I don’t even remember the name. I just subscribed for like a month and made a few intros on it then unsubscribed lol. The action parts I just clip out manually for each vid tho. I wouldn’t recommend doing that, kinda humbug and not sure it’s worth the effort lmao. 😂.
