'69 grad here. Some differences from 55 years ago: third class were called yearlings, mess hall tables had white table clothes, wore dress gray to supper, no laptops, we still used slide rules and programmed main frame computer with mark sensed paper cards, we had no life science course options. Thanks for sharing, best wishes!

My Computer Science P talked about punched cards from his time as a Cadet. He said that he was running to run his job with a box full of punched cards in hand when he slipped on the ice. All of his cards went flying. He did not want to be a Computer Science professor but it was what was offered to him when they gave him the option of going to grad school and going on to be a professor at USMA.

Thanks for your video! Great to see a proud Hispanic young man from Puerto Rico at West Point! My son is a sophomore in HS and is considering applying to West Point. I am a retired USAFR LtCol and former Army officer. Best of luck!

I enjoy how the geography class is called "dirt." The Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M has similarly apt vernacular for various things. Coffee, for instance, is "dope." A certain breakfast egg dish in Duncan Dining Hall is "scrambled cackle." And there are lots more. (My wife gets irritated at me for always calling ketchup "blood," and rice "maggots.)

USMA is such a cool location. My brother was Class of 2012. I always, always loved going to visit the academy.

Very cool video. I am the military advisor at the University of Manitoba. We host a couple West Point cadets each January for a couple days at a student led conference. Some years, some learn what a cold Canadian prairie winter is. Who ever came up in 2024 got it easy. :-) 21 hours is a lot of credit.

Great video! Quick question - were you able to transfer your classes from UofM to USMA, or did you have to retake all the courses from UofM?
@jtf19577 ай бұрын
Appreciate it! West Point did not accept any transfer credits from UMiami, so I ended up taking classes I had before.

I noticed that you have both your class pins and rank pins on your collars, what are the ranks cadets have at West Point? Are they regular army ranks or a different set of ranks?
@jtf19577 ай бұрын
The ranks at west point are different from the regular Army. There are 4 ranks that correspond to each year at west point: plebe year: no rank insignia worn yuk year: yellow crest and 1 bar (what i wore in the video) cow year: silver crest with 2 bars firstie year: black crest with 3 or more bars

Plebes don’t have table duties anymore or did you just not show them?

They still do just not in the video. Plebes typically check the condiments, get snacks and drinks for the table, call the table, etc.

@@jtf1957 I realized your at the end of the year so I'm guessing way more relaxed than earlier. Do the Plebes still get the jobs of Cold Beverage Corporal, Hot Beverage Corporal, and Gunner (the dessert person)?

Do they Also have to go to the regular Army basic training, after they graduate?
@jtf19577 ай бұрын
No, we commission straight into the army after here and attend BOLC, a course for officers to learn their job
@fgodek19645 ай бұрын
When I went through Cadet Basic Training in 1981, it was longer than regular Army basic training and we did things, like bayonet training, that had (at the time) been removed from regular Army basic training.
