Never, never has a movie surprised and fascinated me like this one. We are here in a parallel world where all appearances are the windows of our most blinding desires and troubles. All distances are abolished and bring us back to the origins of our translucent illusions. I would like to lose myself definitively in all these looks, these gardens, these woodwork and these vanishing lines. Unequaled work of implosive beauty!

When I saw this as an 18 year old film student I thought it was steaming pile of bullshit. As a 70 year old I find this a masterpiece! Does this mean my long-term exposure to American Media Culture has resulted in a taste for bullshit? Perhaps.

I first saw this movie in 1980 as part of my film course in college. I have only one criticism of this film: the use of the organ was ill advised. I think Bernard Herrmann could have done interesting things with this film.

The use of organ music is never ill-advised.

Alain Robbe-Grillet also thought the organ music was ill-advised and had originally conceived of a soundtrack “designed to set the nerves on edge”, consisting of a score based on “realistic noises such as one hears in old-style hotels”. This would have been constructed from recordings of lift doors, gates, bells that summon employees, etc arranged with a structure full of holes and shocks.

Really tedious and self-absorbed.

Yeah, in a way it is self-absorbed. But having said that, self-absorbed can sometimes make for the most interesting art as you get to be inside the artist's heart and soul... and that is 100 times more engaging than crap without soul or heart.... And "Last Year at Marienbad" is the most beautiful movie I have ever seen... And that cannot be discounted.

For those who understand, no explanation is needed. For those who don’t understand, no explanation will suffice. And I’m better than you. Perhaps.
