LastHumansTech: Atari 2600 - Cleaning Your Cartridge Slot

Card and a microfiber cloth. I knew there was a way to get in there. The Atari 7800 I am working on definitely needs its cartridge slot cleaned. Most of my games wouldn’t read but would on my 2600. Thanks a ton.

right on, i had a couple 7800's a couple years ago. i play pole position on my 2600 almost daily.

I never thought of this. I am always cleaning the cartridge but not the console itself. That probably is another clue to why there are artifacts on the screen.

well, not really, artifacts wouldn't come from not cleaning a cart. but artifacts could come from older capacitors, that's why you replace some of them.

Lasthumansgarage my game slot broke somehow. The games won't seat properly and the slot acts like a spring is pushing them out. Do you have any idea what's wrong? Help!

damn you need a new console i guess. i wouldnt ever try soldering in a new slot, but it could be done.

@@LastHumansGarage It's OK! I found out it was just a piece of plastic in the bottom of the slot. A tooth broke off a game. I fished it out and it's fine now.

Well now I just feel foolish. I spent ages looking for something thin and strong enough to slide into my corroded Atari cartridge slot and it never once occurred to me to grab one of the unused store cards out of my wallet! Doh! 😳
