I think Ahmedabad BRTS is most successful & well planned & well maintained..... Ahmedabad BRTS is biggest brts network in the country. Plus at many places it interconnected with metro , indian railway, State transport Stops & normal City buses & even Ahmedabad airport, and now also connected with future bullet train project. I tried Surat, Rajkot , Indore brts but Ahmedabad BRTS network is very huge, almost cover all main parts of both new & old City areas. Quite seamless & punctual. Good thing is around 75/80 % buses are EV buses.

I've visited multiple countries, and almost all of them had dedicated bus lanes and proper stops. It's disheartening that India lacks a robust bus system. Even in Delhi, there are no proper bus stops, live tracking, or dedicated lanes. Relying solely on metros for public transport will never ensure last-mile connectivity. If buses were more reliable and user-friendly, many people would happily switch from private cars to public transport.

I live and study in Europe, Latvia to be exact and we have riga buses where they have dedicated bus lanes with markings. If a car tries to enter the lane they might get a challan (might because some sections have cameras installed) and people have civic sense here they know bus lanes are for buses and the result is buses are always on time. They have time tables for all public transport in city and they are on time +-1/2 minutes. Moreover to promote ev cars the government here allowed ev cars to use all bus lanes and they can bypass traffic and people are adopting more and more

There is no reason why BRT cannot work in Delhi. The principal idea is to make public transport faster and make it appealing for the private vehicle owners to make the switch. Now where the system failed is the cross sections. The signals there became 6 phased from 4 earlier before the BRT. This slowed down the entire traffic appreciably including the BRT buses as red signal wait became much longer. This was a case of a poor design. Grade separators at cross sections were a must looking at volume of traffic. These would have increased the project cost but ensured its success. However, there were alternative designs possible to reduce the cost such as low cost narrower beam type grade separators for buses only with bus rail guide type steering mechanisms. One wonders why designers including the principal advisor, IITD failed to do a much thorough design job. Last thing one could expect was from Delhi’s favourite engineer CM, who ordered its dismantling without much investigation for design improvements. Giving up on sound principles is not the way to build any great infra works and is a defeatist policy by any public body.

BRTS is no 1 choice of politicians because it's cheap. But they never implement it in its actual form. Theoretically, BRTS lanes should be dedicated and uninterrupted which means there should be underpass or flyover at intersections so that no other vehicles can enter the lane or restricted the BRTS buses at intersection. The buses can switch their direction only at BRTS terminal/depot (last stop). Implementing such BRTS system requires more cost and efforts therefore authorities implement it with limited features only.

Problem with brt was that roads were not wide enough due to which private traffic congestion increased drastically which lead to hours of jam. Either roads should be wide enough or traffic should be very low . And brt was made in a very densely populated area so it was bound to fail.

Private vehicle owners should support bus alnes because traffic will reduce if built properly, if you start protessting at 6 km, then of course you will think it's not working, but if you wait a little more like indore, it will certainly reduce traffic, and even without buses, there is evidence that lowering lanes increases traffic congestion for a year but after that, it returns to the same level. Same way, increasing lanes reduces traffic for 1 year, but then returns to the same level because of something called induced demand Here's a video of it for those interested - kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXm9qIJ3fsqWqpYsi=zUdx0tyg9fNGWao_
