I feel Lataji was probably right in demanding royalties. The industry is such that it doesn't cater for the well being of artists who have thru their efforts ensured that producers and directors or record companies make money. The artist is then left to his destiny when things get tough for them during and many post their careers. The system must change for the artist to thrive in all fairness.

In a way Lata ji was right. There are interviews of singers like Mubarak Begum, Anwar Hussain etc who suffered a lot financially when they stopped getting songs. Same with GM Durrani. If they got royalty, it would have helped them. Rafi ji was a pure soul n might not have got the point at that time.

Many are mislead by Lata that the dispute between her and Rafi was over royalty. However insiders know that before public fall out over songs’ royalty, Lata was upset that Rafi was singing with singers other than Lata and Asha. Rafi declined to choke the careers of other singers. Rafi was a perfect gentleman. He didn’t interfere with the jobs of music director, lyricist and producer. The tension of Rafi’s refusal to facilitate Lata’s monopoly resulted in an eruption of her anger disguised as a policy differences over the royalty. We don’t know what Lata said to Rafi that made the otherwise cool Rafi so mad that he said that he wouldn’t sing with Lata going forward. Rafi and Asha both had the same stand on royalty yet Asha being Lata’s sister patched up with her but the duo ganged up against Rafi for rest of their lives. They kept denigrating Rafi’s singing. Asha ran away with Bhosle because Lata wouldn’t let her sing. Asha was determined to make her own career and she took a different path to accomplish her goal. She used men to further her career. She stole Asha’s manager Bhosle who had good industry connections and had marketed Lata well. He successfully launched Asha. After making her name she dumped Bhosle and patched up with Lata. She hooked up with OP Nayyar. Once Nayyar’s career was over she seduced RD Burman. She broke up with RD and started living separately when he didn’t have work. However upon his death she came to claim his property and royalty. She put RD’s mother into an old age home and took the ownership of SD Burman’s house and his songs’ royalty. She also kicked out her daughter in law and her granddaughter upon her son’s death and took over the house they were living in. Actress Sadhna had rented a house from Asha and was living there. When Sadhana was very old and could not afford to pay rent increase, Asha set upon her goons who shut down her water. Sadhana was alone and sick. She had lost her husband, had no children and was half blind at age 74 and was about to die but Asha had no mercy. Lata set up her monopoly over playback singing and like a gangster finished off her competition. To name a few Geeta Dutt, Mubarak Begum, Suman Kalyanpur, Sharda, Sudha Malhotra, Kanchan, Vani Jayaram, Sulakshna Pandit, Usha Timothy, Usha Mangeshkar, Meena Mangeshkar, Preeti Sagar fell victim to her. It’s a shame that amongst hundreds of crores of people India could not have another singer. Music lovers didn’t have a choice and were denied many good singers who could have enthralled them. Lata was a bully. She boycotted SD Burman, Sajjad Hussain, Jai Kishan, Raj Kapoor, Khemchand Prakash, Mohammed Rafi when they worked with other singers.

Some artists never focus on money...i know one thing thag whenever the accountant of any recording studio would ask M.Rafi Saahab about how much money needs to be written on the check, Rafi Saahab would quickly and shortly answer.." Aray bhai jo bhi hai sahi hi hoga aur check ghar pe bhijwa Dena..." Aur yeh kehke turat wahaan se nikal kar doosray studio ki taraf chalay jaatay that. Means....he never wanted to get perplexed in any negotiation....contrary to that...his vocal simily by Anwar Hussain whi came in late 70s set the price for each song...more than what Rafi Saahab accepted...that ticked off Chintu....Rishi Kapoor ..and Anwar Hussain quickly got booted and replaced by Suresh Wadekar in Premrog. Star like Rafi Saahab are rarely seen...his range of voice was so large from Mundra Saptak to Taar Saptak without getting any distortion whatsoever...and Lata.ji knew that and you can hear in her voice how casual shw was w Rafi Saahab. Essentially, there are artists who are also good financial planners while some stayed out of the finances....because they are totally focused on the art of giving their best. Incidence w presence of Ustad Mehdi Hassan is funny...although they were two different genres in singing, but Rafi Saahab.s proximity to Lata.ji is obvious in his jealousy and I think Rafi Saahab regarded and treated Lata.ji as a little sister. Lata.ji also had a soul.brother besides Hridainath Mangeshkar who she called Bhaiyaa...and he was none other than Madam Mohan Kohli...kya daughter thi Madan Mohan Saahab ki...he regarded Lata.ji as Didi and called her Didi all the time. One of their legendary composition...Rasme Ulfat ko nibhayen kaisay....will remain popular forever and there are many such tracks.

In the movie Black Cat (1959), "Mein tumhi se poochti hoon" song, Mohd. Rafi sang just 2 lines even though he was a big singer then, without a protest, and Lata sang all the remaining lines. That was his humility and simplicity. I am sure Lata would have refused to sing just 2 lines and let the bulk of the lines to be sung by her co- singer.

Well, speaking neutrally, Lata didi was trying to help all the singers. In fact, she even supported Mubarak begum a singer who lost her livelihood exactly to the point of Lata Mangeshkar that royalty should be provided to singers . Rafi ji should not have called Lata Mangeshkar as maharani. I have high respect for him, but that word was not acceptable. So whether he gave or did not give apology Is immaterial. He cannot use that word ( period )
