Both are good general tractors for daily use. I think David Brown had 2 advantages , stronger front axle and easy starting in cold weather. But Layland has a better setup for the 3 point hitch control. Being American I don't understand why they don't allow use of remote and 3 point at the same time. It's unnecessary to have to select what you need to use before using it. All hydraulic systems should function symotaniosly no matter what. Even a tractor from Russia and China have that functionality. Always make me wonder why they made it so overly complicated to use. But I love my David Brown 990 and won't trade it for anything because it's dependable and strong for it's age. Thanks for sharing your Tractors with us.

Tbh, a British Ford or Massey Ferguson the same age have separate spool valves, DB and Leyland were a bit slow to update things e.g. brakes, pto clutch, hydraulics. The later Case (DB) and yellow Marshall/Leyland did have spools though

@@arwelagrimachinery I like the Ford Ferguson tractors. But the Ferguson system lifts always left me chaining up the lift because they got weak. Running a brush cutter and plow always left me stranded until it cools down. I'd buy a IH or Deer because the hydraulic system was strong and reliable for constant usage. Everything has a strong point. Ford's and Ferguson tractors don't get hung up in the swamp but they don't have enough strength for the rest of the job. But comfort is not good with IH or Deer but very durable. I have found my Case/ David Brown is a compromise for power and fuel efficiency. Still could be more versatile in the hydraulic system but it's reliable and strong. But any tractor today is just a nightmare with computer control and expensive to repair. Love the simple old tractor of the past when they were made by people. Thanks for letting me rant 😂.

@charleswelch249 old TO20 ? If the same as the TE20 British version, the PTO shaft ran the hydraulic pump , switch that off the impliment soon comes down 🤣 . Kverneland in Norway (?) Made a latch to hold 3pl up while transporting 1 of their ploughs . Later Massey 35 had the hydraulic pump driven off the pto, but it was in front of the sector for having it Turning at the back so they solved that problem

Hello , I have had both a Leyland , then ( now ) a D.B. , the cab on my d.b. is the Danish Sekura one , it,s far more spacious than the Airflow Victor cab was on m,y 272 , but it,s one n oisy devil , both the engines are good starters , Leyland & D.B. , neither of them guzzle fuel too badly , but for me the Leyland engine is streets ahead in build technology , as it,s a 5 bearing engine with a crank balancer on , this is why it just sings , the D.B. has it,s own characteristic nasal chortle about it , a bit like a small version of a Scania truck , but a word of warning for all you remaining Leyland devotees out there , if your battery ( volts ) gauge sinks down even just the once for no explainable reason , thoroughly inspect all the heavy wiring harness work underneath the front of the cab , it,s a bitch to get at , you,d probably be better off fully removing the whole cab , so you can clearly see it , look for any points of chafing on the heavy , usually brown power supply cables running to & from the starter & ignition switch , also the alternator . If it,s less than perfect , strip the whole lot out & renew it , find a way of housing it inside trunking , not easy as there,s very little room under there , an excellent idea is to fit a battery isolator switch as close as possible to the battery positive terminal , this could stop a terrible electrical fire , I now also carry a fire extinguisher in the cab , fixed in . I wish I,d still got my old lass , she went straight up in flames & smoke & I just couldn,t save her . Bloody invisible electrical short buried underneath the cab , I never once took the cab right off , or I,d have seen it . Never modified the wiring either ( never sleeved it in trunking ). Learn from my experience . Battery isolator switches & a good fire extinguisher .

Never had any interest to Meltham mill stone -factory products. Leylands were always better starters, they got more road speed and lot of ground clearance. Also if you put 2x4" to cut to road DB is pushing it like dog with its nose, Leyland's very light nose jumps over it = very capable at forests and very good tractiom when ploughing.

One key thing to check on all old tractors is the gearshift gaiters. Damaged gaiters is the main cause of water ingress to the transmission/hydraulic oil, and the main cause of internal corrosion because split gaiters were common on most old tractors, even new ones dontt last long and something that gets neglected.

I worked for a dealer on both brands. Each tractor brand has advantages and disadvantages, I liked them both in different ways. The DB seemed to suit a certain type of gentleman farmer, the leyland was a strong workhorse., certainly less likely to get stuck. Probably the best feature of the Leyland was the engine. Sweet and smooth. And good low end torque, they would pull strongly from 1200 rpm upwards, Good starters too, especially the older ones with an inline fuel pump. Of that time the Leyands had the sweetest engine, just ran better than the fords, or Perkins Not many people know that the 262 and 272a exactly the same engine, just a different fuel injection pump setting. Early 262 models had higher compression pistons to aid cold start, so resetting the fuel pump to 272 setting (a fuel shop job) would give a 262 closer to 75 hp

@arwelagrimachinery
@arwelagrimachinery 17 күн бұрын
@colmanlong1032 5 , just a better/stronger job , I will say though its the bigger 4cyl tractors like the 1210/12 , 1410/12 that are more likely to snap the 3 bearing cranks, the smaller/lower Hp 990-996 are quite good tbf . They even had to reduce HP from the 1410/12 (91hp) to the later 1490 (83hp) / 1494 (85hp) , most likely due to that weakness.

I have a 1974 996 which I am bring back in to use slowly. Quite a few differences on your later model. 4 way valve on hydraulics where 3 way on mine. You still have the valve chest for controlling the hydraulics. Most complicated thing on the tractor. Have a new video every Saturday. The DB 996 I have sat at the sea side for 2 years doing nothing and caused quite a few problems. I would say the 1974 is les complex than yours. Have a look some time M 😀

Thank you👍 . Pretty similar spec wise really and their own engine, etc like the other 2 but foot brakes way ahead , the independent clutch pack pto is a better/more advanced job rather than the dual clutch. The DB has 2 speed pto and synchro gears standard like the IH and the leyland has the pickup hitch and power steering standard like the IH and DB (option for synchro gears on leyland) so similar specs really but the leyland and DB use a dual clutch with hand clutch for pto plate and the IH has a separate wet clutch in the backend like a Ford run off the hydraulic oil and the IH foot brakes are wet disc brakes like a Ford too which are a much better job for working and lasting but the IH handbrake which is a brake band in the gearbox is a poor job , worse than DB/leyland in that way
