Fascinating and very nicely presented. I'd love to come and visit the orchard one day and try how the ciders come out!

I do not miss the UK or indeed Welsh weather, but being in China and having to use apple concentrate which was shipped over 1000 miles to get to me, and oak shipped from France, really brings home, appreciating things when you have them. Things nowadays seem to come in one variety. Apple, potato, etc, just the one type, the awful kind lol. Well, I am hoping the Cider God is looking down on me and mine is at least bearable.

Very informative, many thanks, is Morgans Sweet a Welsh variety? I have 3 in my retirement hobby orchard and it ripens quite early what would you blend this with? thanks Peter

No Morgan's Sweet is an English variety although some have said it is an adopted welsh variety as it was sold extensively to the mining community of South Wales as an eating apple in the past. As the apples were very soft supposedly they could still be eaten if your teeth have fallen out from the horrors of mine work! Blending wise, I tend to blend it with early sharps from my orchard such as Breakwell's Seedling, Coleman's Seedling, Frederick & Tom Putt to create a light, sharp spring cider to be served sweet (to cover the sharpness and add a bit of body to the cider). If you could get some early bitters or store it in an oak barrel it would help get some body into the cider which would improve it as well. Dry it will make quite a light thin cider, just something to bear in mind if you like bitter Somerset style ciders.

@@llanblethianorchards A vey interesting story about the miners teeth, I was told that Morgan's Sweet was an early cider /juicing apple mixed with water to slake the miners thirst. I haven't any early sharps but have a Fox's Whelp (early Bittersharp) and a good bit of Brambly would that work? Thanks again.
