Greetings from the Southeastern part of the state of Michigan! Enjoy all your videos but this one is worth a comment! Very entertaining. Upon your recommendation I grafted some Kidds Orange Red onto B118 rootstock back in 2012. Great grower that one. You got to it towards the end, I was nervous you would bypass it but glad to hear still one of your favs! I have 2 of them of my 36 trees. Great stuff Stephen - thank you much (Julia too) for your efforts in helping small growers!

Hey Jim, I noticed you mentioned having heritage trees and I may be interested in visiting if possible (from Northern Indiana). We had a really great orchard near us for a while, but the owner was getting older and his children weren't interested in carrying on the family business as he had done. It's a shame really. He had beautiful trees that had to be 150 years old, thick-trunked gnarled things.

A real orchard just down the road from me, Ashton Orchards, has a much greater assortment than my limited 36. Most mine are still quite small. Jim

Have you ever had the urge to build or purchase a small storage facility/cooler? Do you need a proof reader for the book?

The apple at the end of the tasting was subsequently identified as probably Queen Cox.

Great video Stephen. Would be good if you could do the same again in February to show the really long keepers. On a different point have you tried 'Golden Russet' as an alternative to Egremont Russet?

I am not sure we will have any apples left in Feb, but if we do, I will vlog about them. Just searched on Golden Russet, Keepers nursery have some, so I will order one. Thanks for jogging me.

Stephen Hayes Golden Russet is one of my absolute favorite apples and I've seen it top 23 brix. But, it isn't a super keeper. Until my tree catches up with my appetite, I've been buying 50+ pounds of them from a semi-local orchard and storing them in our second fridge. I try to finish them up sometime in January, as by this point they are really starting to soften. By then, I still like them, but the end is near. I

Bob Vance I believe there is an English Golden Russet, which may be different than our American Golden Russet over here, although some say ours is from England originally. I love the American Golden Russet too. It's the apple that inspired me to start really collecting apples. I've also used it as a parent in breeding experiments. I knew they could be very sweet, but 23 brix is outrageous!

Stephen Hayes Another Russet that might be worth growing is the 'Norfolk Royal Russet'. I tried them this year loved the flavour explosion (as you put it) so have planted a tree.

hello Me Hayes. I from the United States (Dallas, Pennsylvania). I have been enjoying your videos for a couple years now. I have started grafting shortly after I started watching your videos. Any chance you will be mailing scion wood to the states this spring? Please let me know. THANK YOU!!

It's nice to see how they keep naturally, it's something most people never get to see. What is the nicest apple you have ever tasted or grown? Merry Christmas :)

Hard to say. What's your favourite meal, drink, view, painting, film or piece of music? Orleans Reinette and Suntan were my favourites today, in August it would be Baker's Delicious, in September Laxton's Epicure, in October Kidd's Orange Red can be delectable, but how can I omit a really ripe Egremont Russet or Ashmead's Kernel? What I really like most is ripe fruit in season for as much of the year as possible.

Stephen Hayes Thanks for the reply Stephen. I was interested to know which ones you liked most so I could try and find some to taste for myself, and maybe grow some if I liked them. Supermarkets sell such a small selection it's difficult to try others. I have a Braeburn growing, but that's common. I did look into growing some "Pink Lady" also because I liked those, but it seems we cant grow them over here from what I have read.

Stephen Hayes I think Pink Lady is trademarked, not copyrighted. The underlying cultivar name is "Cripps Pink", which should be available. But, it may not be grown much in the UK due to the need for a long season.

Bob Vance I believe that's what I read, that they needed a long season to grow and would not be suited to growing over here in the UK. It's a shame, I would of loved to of grown some. Thanks for informing me about the "Cripps Pink" I will have a look what I can find out about that and see where I go from there :)

Topaz is an excellent, strongly flavored apple. I got some from a farmer's market this fall and they were among the best. Up there with Goldrush and Golden Russet. For mid-season, Kidds Orange Red and Sweet Sixteen are my current favorites.

Hi Vincent. I did explore the idea of a solar powered cooler ( we have no electricity at the orchard) but drew a blank. Where we are rebalancing the orchard business it makes little economic sense to invest money to extend our sales season, we have a deal with a cider maker to take all fruit we don't sell. I will discuss details of the economics of the project in the book. Thanks for offering to proof read, I may ask for help when the manuscript is complete. The words are pouring from my head and fingers and I am hopeful for a springtime release.

I would really like to get a basket or two of your lovely apples. Which area do you sell at Market ? &Have you tested for stray voltage and wifi RF for the stored fruit health. Wifi can be disabled if it is not used by simple means, just type: whatismyip into browser, copy the number & paste it into the URL address bar at the very top, press enter and enter details and password, and that will take you into your router given by the internet provider where you can disable wifi connectivity Remember to put the Ethernet cable into which ever computer you use from then on if you have been used to wifi

Sorry we have just pulled out of marketing for various reasons. We will supply reasonable quantities by arrangement to anyone who can collect from our home in southern Hampshire. No fruit available until July 2015 at earliest. Regards.
