Late Dropping Chestnut update late Summer 2023 As requested

Here’s the update on the late dropping trees as requested. All are doing well and have survived the extreme heat so far. We will hopefully have a bunch of chestnuts in a couple of months.

It looks like late fall in my pecan orchard. At least half the leaves have fallen because of this heat and drought in my sand. The majority of my pecans have also fallen. The trees are shedding everything for their survival mode. This is the worst year on my trees that I can remember when you combine the heat and drought together, since I planted my orchard in the late 80s.

That’s not good. Looks like I lost a chestnut tree due to heat. I have some shade cloth ordered but I think it’ll be too little too late. That’s not good on your pecans. Mine are still hanging in there but they have so many on them that the trees are really stressed. Limbs are breaking and if we were to ever get a storm it wouldn’t be good if the wind blew very hard.

@@MattPatterson1411 I lost quite a few, first year, in-ground chestnuts. I’ve got mosquito net over the ones in ground. My other potted chestnuts are in the shade. I need more mosquito net. I traded a guy some pecans for that military mosquito net years ago. I’ve got about 300 crape myrtles in 6 varieties I’ve rooted. Mail ordered pots yesterday so I can start potting them up to sell this fall. I just finished unloading 190 gallons of loose potting soil I had dumped into the bed of my truck today. I know it’s 190 gallons because I put it in 55 gallon barrels. Not bad for $17.50 but also not the greatest potting soil. Dino Soil from the Denton dump made from yard waste and sewage sludge. Yum. I’ll use it in the bottoms of my pots and use Miracle Grow Moisture Control potting soil on top where the young roots are. As the roots grow they can get down into the cheaper soil in the bottom of the pots. I can’t make much money (if any) using expensive soil. These crape myrtles are supposed to be the best varieties for our area according to Neil Sperry and other crape myrtle experts. They test every known variety in the “Crape myrtle trials of McKinney”. They have a listing of the best varieties on that website. Also a list of all CM.
