Another tip if you're crazy enough to fish in sub zero like I have in past, when you pull trailer out after dropping boat (if you have surge/drum brakes) drive around a while And try to get the water out of brakes, I had them freeze solid on me , wheel hopped/ skidded all the way to ramp, and couldn't back up,had to get propane heater ,suckedhard😢

Great tips, I have one also, just loop you lines, don’t tie them tight if your leaving the boat in cause your lines easily freeze in a few hours and it’s murder to untie...

Hey Tom, great stuff! Just curious though....do all lakes have this shallow bite? I'm on a deeper lake in Ontario with a lot of smelt and we've been getting lots of smallies in the 30 to 35 ft zone on mid lake rock piles. It's been a lot tougher getting the walleye bite. I've noticed big schools of fish over open basins down around 40 ft probably feeding on smelt but I can't get them to bite. Is it worth it trying to fish for those really deep fish or would you focus on a shallower bite? I just didn't know if they were feeding on smelt if they would be up shallow...appreciate any comments you have! Good stuff as always

What's up Tom, Rob hear from Green Bay, them warm temps just hit so you know I'm about to hit Depere. Question for you, how are you running your dual helix set up I got a helix 5 side imaging and a helix 7 down imaging and would like to know how you running your set up. I was looking on your channel for a electronics set up video but didn't notice anything. As usual Tom, there's always some new 'wrinkles' to be picked up (besides the more fundamental to success 'folds') in your video- thank you. We each have our preferences when it comes to methods and equipment, so there may not always be a universal 'best way' to overcome any particular hurdle. If whatev works well for us. And we're happy? Mission accomplished, right? Ok, that said, after 56 winters and counting, on keeping hands warm, for anyone winter angler's consideration, i gott'a say... (as a lean person with low blood pressure and so only so-so circulation in the hands, no less), ... two final words (lol, according to most, Henry Wordsworth Longfellow's got nuttin' on me!): Gorilla Grips. What are they like, you ask? Think of lighter, thinner, stretchier, more form-fitting gardening gloves used by mechanics and you'll be close, basically. Getch'a some, and then see for yourself if these aren't 'better mousetraps' for cold (and warm-) weather angling. Why? In no particular order... 1) They are dirt cheap. 2) So compact, i always have TWO pairs in (just one) of my trouser pockets - to either switch out,, or to give away (because they are available in bulk packs too, 'gifting' to a stranger costs less than most lures, and won't soon be forgotten - who knows your beneficiary may even reciprocate in trade and/or tips). 3) They wring out more thoroughly, and dry faster, than almost any other garment i can think of. 4) can tie knots (even in #2 leader material or braid) WHILE wearing them. 5) Option to place at least one dry chem pack handwarmer, which will last longer 6) idk if variations in some people's transferred L-Serine levels makes a real difference in terms of discouraging bites, but the whole topic is instantly rendered mute. 7) spares hands all sorts of minor nicks, scuffs, and cuts. 8) comes in sunlight -absorbing black, with different sizes denoted by different color trim on the extended wrists 9) they 'break in' quickly 10) fish friendly (removes less mucous (aka fish slime) from our C&R's 11) leaves our hands clean, dry, and don't stink of fish or bait when heading directly to 'apres-fish' venues (e.g. 🍺 tavern, or 🍕 pizza joint) for celebrating the outing with sustenance. 12) little to no reduction in critical 'fishing feel'. 13) readily slip in and out of pant, shirt, and jacket pockets Those baker's dozen solid reasons are just off the top of my head; there are a few more i could think of (e.g. eliminates sun- and wind- burn), to like them, but warmer hands alone seal the deal for me. They keys to such amazing performance are deceptively simple: It's counter-intuitive for sure, but UNlike so many other kinds of gloves, the thinner the waterproof coating (which unlike a surgical glove, is NOT quite right up against the skin), the less capacity that layer has to absorb (suck away) whatever warmth our natural bloodstream is delivering (be that a little, or a lot, who cares? It's still a heat marginal savings no matter where on the continuum an angler's individual physiology might be. Keeps moisture and/or perpetual contact with warmth-sapping colder air off the skin surface. Traps warmer air against the skin Wrists (where blood vessels sit so close to the skin) are completely covered. i've yet to try this hack (too forgetful), but it wouldn't surprise me if the knitted back sides wouldn't become semi- water resistant if in anticipated rain or snow, they were pre-treated with a spray. of Scotchguard or equivalent And for that matter they could probably accept a permetherone wash, and so help limit/discourage 'skeeter and other biting insects Can make a more effective seal at the shirt or velcro-adjustable cuffs - and hold it by friction. And if you want or need even more protection, with absolutely no associated additional loss of dexterity, you can wear two nested gloves on each hand (i'd recommend using one size under your natural choice (they'll very quickly stretch to avoid retricting blood flow), and then to supplement, just snip off the tips (or more; customizable with just a sharp pocket knife, in the field) of the thumb and first finger or two on the 'over-pair' And if you don't find G²'s to be all i've claimed, they STILL make an ideal glove for say, cleaning fish (and 'a million other ordinary, everyday, non-fishing applications).

I use Stanley's ice off paste, it's not perfect but rubbing alittle on every so often really helps with keeping the ice down. Using a rod with bigger guide holes, is probably the easiest way to control ice but not all of us have rods for each season.
