I think he’s afraid. He sees himself and Mari as culprits in the murder of a small child and he is genuinely terrified of giving up what little of their life that he and Mari have. It also may be worth mentioning that Hero and Mari were older compared to Omori AU when the tragedy happened, which would affect them differently than it did Sunny and Basil. Kids tend to push people away in these kinds of situations where a personal tragedy is involved, while teenagers and young adults may try to cling to normal life and whatever connections they have with other people. Hero is manipulative here but I doubt he is thinking purely of his own self interest. Perhaps he feels stuck between keeping the truth away even if it’s hurting them and getting himself and Mari into another trouble, one where they would be separated from each other for a very long time.
