Piscopo is often the but of many jokes, but he was far underappreciated. His Sinatra as well as his Letterman were second to none! Glad to see SNL is putting out these classic clips.

This has everything I want to see in an SNL sketch. Everything I want to see, period. This is the best way to start the day. This was my favorite time ever, Late Night with David Letterman was my favorite TV show, Joe Piscopo was absolutely hilarious, Eddie Murphy was brilliant, all of it, just all of it. They really captured the spirit of Dave and his show, when they were edgy and self deprecating and snarky before snark existed. I wish there were a thousand more of these spoofs of Late Night...

And Piscopo excelled at it. Super talented guy, i actually know him best from his early 90s bodybuilding phase. Great musician as well, i would take him over any SNL cast member of the past 15 years

I respect your comment because you make valid points and references to other shows👏👏🔥🔥 but in my opinion if you have to reference other tv shows to justify his credibility as to being funny on the show alone I don’t see it. I’ll watch more of this era of SNL and him sketch wise but he’s just not doing it for me let alone having to get his sense of humor to appreciate him more so. And I agree the last 15 years of SNL has been terrible but Kate McKinnon holds the golden standard of what it used to be. But that’s one in many.

Actually, Detective Munch crossed over from Homicide; Life on the Streets where his character originally appeared. He ALSO crossed over in a prequel episode of the X-Files (the Lone Gunmen origin story).

Apparently you’ve never been guilty of spelling errors and although Norm MACDONALD was a fine comedian, I’m sure the jury is still out as to who the greatest was, even among SNL alumni. I myself never suggested Macdonald wasn’t good whatsoever at impressions, just that Joe Piscopo’s was better in this instance. What’s more, I also observed that Macdonald was a superior comedian to the latter, so any criticism of him was mild at best.

Actually did sound like him - wouldn't be surprised. Sometimes former cast members have been known to drop by the studio just to hang out backstage. Possible that he got talked into doing a low-key cameo like that. Odd thing is that Piscopo himself played Tom Snyder a few times during his seasons.

I saw the real Gumby cartoon where the “Marvin Hamlisch” scene came from: in the cartoon, Gumby and Pokey are upset about life on Earth and go looking for another planet to live. When they encounter “Marvin”, he gets so upset, he turns into a werewolf and makes Gumby and Pokey leave.

Sounds like they couldn't use Late Night's theme music for legal reasons on KZbin. I remember seeing this clip when it aired and the SNL band was playing Letterman's theme in the beginning and closing of this sketch hence why Gumby's further verbal attacks were muted out when the applause appeared.

Anyone catch that the guy in the stall was supposed to be Tom Snyder, host of NBC's "Tomorrow". It sounds like Dan Aykroyd, who portrayed Snyder in earlier seasons. Piscopo also portrayed Snyder in his turn. And we need to see more of Eddie Murphy's Gumby the ageing Yiddish vaudevillian. Maybe someday, they'll upload Gumby's "Have a Merry Christmas, Dammit!"

Norm's seems better in part because it captures the more recent version of Dave that is fresher in our minds. But Piscopo absolutely nailed the Dave of 1983.
